Storm Warning on Mallorca: Orange Alert Starting at Midnight

It smells of rain and sea — not the pleasant summer rain, but real shower weather. The Spanish weather agency Aemet has raised Mallorca's warning levels once again. From midnight, orange alert levels are expected in the north and northeast, and on Monday nearly the entire island will be under heightened warning, only the island's center remains initially excluded.

When exactly does the warning apply?

The most critical phase begins on the night from Sunday to Monday, around 12:00 a.m.. The uncomfortable showers, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, are expected to spread over the coastal areas and the interior. For Monday, Aemet issued a wide orange warning — in short: it will be wet and partly stormy.

What is to be expected?

In short: heavy rain, isolated thunderstorms and locally high rainfall. Temperatures drop sharply from late-summer values to around 23–26 °C. For Tuesday the outlook remains uncertain — further showers are possible. Only towards the end of the week do forecasts expect a slight recovery with somewhat warmer moments, around up to 27 °C in Palma on Friday.

Concrete safety tips for residents and visitors

A few things that make daily life easier when the water comes: keep street drains clear, close balcony doors, secure garden furniture. While driving: keep distance, hydroplaning is not a myth. Those walking along the coast should preferably take a detour to higher ground — surf zones and cliffs react quickly. Aemet also recommends regularly checking official alerts and taking local warnings seriously.

I was briefly at Passeig del Born this afternoon — the air was heavy, vendors were folding up their awnings. Such scenes we see here more often in autumn, but rarely so concentrated over several days in a row. For vacationers: keep plans flexible, don't forget a rain jacket and keep your apps running.

Stay careful, go out only if necessary, and inform friends or family about your route. A little precaution can prevent a lot of trouble — and the sea will still be there when the sun comes back.
