Evening talks and people gathered on the Plaça under palm trees at Club Pollença

Architecture under Palms: Design Week at Club Pollença Invites Conversations by Evening Light

From 18 to 20 August the Club Pollença will once again become a meeting point for architecture enthusiasts: three evenings, international guests, local offices and plenty of exchange on the Plaça – free of charge, but with limited seating.

When Dusk Falls: Architecture, Conversations and Sea Air

In Pollença, on hot August evenings, you hear more than the regular clatter of café chairs: the quiet crackle of ideas. From 18 to 20 August 2025, the old Club Pollença will once again turn into a place where building is discussed not only as a technical task but as an attitude. Those who come to the Plaça will sense the mix of sea air, Tramuntana pebbles and the muted hum of voices – a fitting setting for talks that invite reflection.

What to Expect Over Three Evenings

The design week starts each evening at 8:00 pm and is aimed both at professionals and curious locals. Admission is free, but registration via Eventbrite (keyword: "arquitectura", location: Pollença) is recommended to secure a seat. The short, compact sequence of presentations is designed so that there is space for questions after each talk, conversations in the foyer and the traditional continued discussion over a glass on the Plaça.

A Programme that Connects International and Local Perspectives

The series opens with Javier Jiménez Iniesta (Studio Animal) together with Kersten Geers (Office Kersten Geers David Van Severen). On the second evening Mariona Benedito and the Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis will speak, while the finale features local offices such as Pau Munar (Munarq), the duo Marta Colón and Juan Palencia (Studio Isla) as well as Marc Morro. This produces a range from technically demanding projects to interventions shaped by craftsmanship.

Common Threads: Sustainability, Landscape, Craft

Those who want to connect the island's design ideas with a clear eye on budget and the environment will find points of connection here: material choice, respect for the landscape and collaboration with local craftsmen run through the programme. It is not uncommon for concrete networks to emerge from such evenings: a stonemason who answers a question, a student with a small model that attracts curious looks. Similar initiatives appear in Open House Palma: Over 60 Doors Open — the City Up Close.

Why This Matters for Mallorca

On Mallorca it's about more than pretty façades. It's about how buildings fit into the Serra de Tramuntana UNESCO World Heritage landscape, how they deal with the dry climate and which materials work in the long run. The discussions in Pollença show how contemporary design can incorporate local techniques instead of replacing them. Such conversations help to treat the island landscape more sensitively, as local debates show in Playa de Palma in Transition: Between Passeig Dreams and Everyday Reality – and that is important beyond aesthetics.

The Club Pollença: A Place with History

The venue itself is part of the story: Club Pollença, once a cycling club founded in 1910, carries the Plaça atmosphere that makes the evenings special. When the lights come on, the clink of glasses, the distant ring of a church bell and the rustle of the pines mingle – creating informal discussion groups that often last longer than the official programme. The same attention to places can be seen during events such as A City You Can Touch: Open House Palma Opens Over 60 Doors.

Who Should Attend

Whether professional or curious layperson: the format is deliberately kept concise so that projects can be presented precisely. Young students find an easy entry point, craftsmen come into conversation with planners, and locals experience how international practices respond to the island landscape. Sometimes a small exchange on the Plaça becomes the foundation for a new project.

Practical Information

Location: Club Pollença (central, Plaça atmosphere). Date: 18–20 August 2025. Time: 20:00. Price: free. Tip: bring a light jacket – sea evenings can get cool, even if the days were hot. Registration via Eventbrite is recommended; places are limited.

In the end, it is often the conversations that remain in memory: by candlelight over a table of sketches, a spontaneous technical exchange with a stonemason or a student who found the courage to ask a question. It is precisely these moments that the Design Week in Pollença makes possible – architecture to hear, feel and pass on.
