In Cala Major, several shops on the busy Joan-Miró Street were closed after cracks were discovered in a load-bearing beam structure. Firefighters and the city building department are securing the building.
Response in Cala Major: Building Closed, Shops Remain Closed
\nLate yesterday around 8:30 PM there was excitement on Joan-Miró Street in Cala Major. Passersby stopped, cars slowed: the fire department, the police and staff from the city building department had several premises cordoned off. In total six shops and one terrace have been closed for now – for safety reasons.
\nWhy the closure?
\nDuring routine checks on site, a clear crack was noticed in a load-bearing beam construction. A business owner reports that the main supporting beam was visibly damaged, and he immediately alerted authorities. The fire department team stabilized the spot temporarily with supports, while the building department continues to assess the situation.
\nOn site, not only barrier tape was used: there are also traffic measures. Joan-Miró Street was temporarily reduced to one lane to give space for emergency vehicles and a small debris-handling vehicle. Residents commented that the security measures seemed precautionary but necessary — no one wants to take a risk.
\nWhat does this mean for the affected businesses?
\nThe operators of the premises now have to wait for an assessment. The mayor or the responsible authority will decide, after a thorough examination, whether repairs are enough or if larger measures are needed. Many of the establishments are small cafés, a kiosk and a bar; the owners report existential concerns because the closure is causing short-term revenue losses.
\nPractical tips: Pedestrians should respect the barriers, nearby parking is temporarily closed, and anyone with appointments in the area should check in advance.
\nOutlook
\nTechnicians and structural engineers are expected to present a detailed report in the coming hours or days. Only then will there be clarity on how long the closure will last. For the neighborhood, one thing is certain: better to be cautious. Small damages to load-bearing parts can quickly lead to big problems — and yesterday this was narrowly avoided.
\nI will continue to monitor the development and report as soon as there is new information. If you know someone affected or have your own observations, please get in touch — such tips are often helpful.
