Colorful Envelopes over Capdepera: Balloon Festival Paints the Morning Sky

More than 25 balloons populated the morning sky over Capdepera. Between old-town steps, the sound of the sea and barista steam, a small festival of color emerged.

Morning aroma, barista and colorful giants

When the first coffee is still steaming in Capdepera and the fishing boats sway gently, color suddenly rises into the air. Today around 8:00 a.m., more than 25 hot-air balloons drifted calmly along the coast — as if rising were part of the weekly schedule. It isn't. The international balloon festival turned the small community into a bright theater for a day.

Where people stand — and how they arrive

The opening last night at Hotel Cap Vermell was more cozy than pompous: chatter, long coffees, pilots studying maps. The same advice applies to spectators as to sunny mornings by the sea: arrive early. Parking is scarce, the walk from the old town takes around 20 minutes and leads over steep steps — a small challenge for little hands and older knees. Those who arrive late will already hear snippets of multilingual commands and see the first colorful dots on the horizon.

Colorful shapes, a little wonder

Not all balloons are standard spheres. Among classic panels there were figures, patterns and surprises — a balloon that looked like a giant dog caused childlike giggles and phone photos. The scene feels calm, yet there's tension in the air: pilots prepare the baskets, helpers stretch the envelopes, and when the wind is right, one basket after another lifts off. Meanwhile you can hear the waves, the cry of seagulls and the quiet hissing of the burner.

For photo hunters: A small tele lens can help bring the colorful specks higher up closer. Those who want to fly at the top: check for available spots in advance, comfortable shoes are a must and the weather decides.

International, safe and family-friendly

The crews come from different countries. At take-off you hear Spanish, English and French commands — a colorful ocean of sounds that fits the festival. Security personnel and volunteers make sure areas are cordoned off; the organization seems relaxed but professional. The feeling of standing under such an inflatable canopy is strange: small, a little awed, but also safe.

Evening highlight in the industrial area

The finale on Sunday is a tip: from 5:00 p.m. the balloons gather in Capdepera's industrial area. Then the baskets stay on the ground, the envelopes are lit with flames and a synchronous glow is created — the so-called 'Night Glow'. At dusk it feels surreal: flames making fabric glow and spectators with jackets against the cooling evening air. Food and drink stalls are on site, but the lines can be long — queuing early pays off.

Why the festival feels so good

It's the small contrasts that make the day special: the leisurely hum of breakfast, children excitedly pointing upward, and then these calm, majestic ascents. For a few hours Capdepera feels like a stage for explorers and neighbors alike. Those who happen to pass by stay; those who planned have brought time. Many will take a picture: colorful fabric against the blue sea and the muffled thud of feet on old town steps.

Practical final note: The weather is the director and decides flight times. Parking is limited, the old town steps demand sure footing. Bring a jacket, charge your camera battery and enjoy how the island looks different for a moment — louder color, quiet wonder and the scent of sea and espresso in the air.
