On Sunday, locals and visitors in Palma will run and stroll to support cancer relief. The start is at Avenida Antoni Maura, with traffic disruptions in the city center.
Running Together: Palma Sends a Message
\nNext Sunday Palma's city center will once again become a meeting point for runners, pedestrians and plenty of good vibes. The Spanish Cancer Society (AECC) is calling for a charity run – it starts at 9:00 AM with an 8-kilometer run. For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, at 11:30 AM there is a 4-kilometer walk. Both starts are at Avenida Antoni Maura, right below the cathedral. I was there last year: the start area smells of fresh coffee from the stalls, and the atmosphere is surprisingly cheerful, despite the serious background.
\n\nRegistering and Being on Site
\nLate registrations are possible: digitally today or tomorrow directly at the start. Bring cash and a bit of patience if the desk is slow. Also pack a light jacket – in Palma it can be chilly in the early morning, later it is often sunny.
\n\nImportant Traffic Information – plan extra time
\nBecause the route runs through the city center, expect several road closures. This concerns especially Avenida Antoni Maura and major access routes around the old town. Specifically, it’s worth knowing:
\nSunday, 6:00 AM: Avenida Antoni Maura will be closed in both directions – between Plaza de la Reina and Paseo Marítimo.
\n8:00–2:00 PM: Further closures in the center, including Vía Roma (from the Avenidas), Jaime III as well as streets in Born, Unió, Sant Miquel, Oms and La Rambla. Expect detours and minor delays.
\n\nPublic Transport, Taxis and Hop-On Hop-Off Buses
\nSeveral EMT bus lines will be diverted. According to the organizers, lines 3, 4, 7, 20, 25 and 35 are affected. The taxi and tourist bus stop at Avenida Antoni Maura will no longer be served from Saturday 2:00 PM. So if you plan to take a taxi from the port or the old town on Saturday evening, please expect changes.
\n\nPractical Tips for Residents and Guests
\nIf you need to shop or go to appointments in the city center on Sunday: leave earlier or choose another day. For drivers: Parking on the edge of the old town fills up quickly, and the one-way rules change at short notice. Pedestrians should pay attention to marked areas – volunteers and stewards help with route guidance.
\n\nAnd another small personal tip: bring a reusable water bottle. There are refreshment stations, but the queue can be long – especially when the sun comes out.
\n\nAll in all, it is a good opportunity to show solidarity, get moving and experience the city differently for a morning. If you’re not running: brace yourself for louder announcements and a lively atmosphere – Palma on a day like this is vibrant, colorful and always a little chaotic.
