Overloaded car stopped in Palma – witness alerts police
Last night around 22:15, in Palma a car stopped that stood out: seven people on board, one even in the trunk. A passerby who was on the Avinguda called the police after a fellow passenger had his upper body through the sunroof. You don't see this every day here – and it ended without a big drama, but with serious consequences.
What the emergency services found
The on-site arriving Policía Local conducted a check. First tests on the driver showed both alcohol and drug use. Several passengers were also found with small amounts of illicit drugs. According to reports, two people sat tightly squeezed on the back seat, one actually crouched in the trunk – a dangerous mix of recklessness and luck that no one was injured.
The driver received multiple charges: driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, dangerous driving, and allowing an overload. The vehicle was temporarily immobilized and towed. The police said they were securing evidence and recording the identities of the involved persons. Relatives or acquaintances had to come later to pick up the remaining people – the usual paperwork after such an operation.
Why this concerns us
On Sunday evenings you often see people trying to extend the day – parties, spontaneous trips, sometimes too much courage. But to put yourself and others in danger is no small matter. Especially on the narrow streets of Palma, such an overload can quickly end in an accident. A small bump, a swerving maneuver – and the consequences would have been much worse.
A neighbor who was just taking his dog for a walk said: "You hear a lot, but when you see it with your own eyes, it's crazy." Such scenes stick. And the police want to set an example with the charges – not to oppress, but to prevent it from happening again.
What happens now
The investigations are ongoing. In addition to fines, the driver faces criminal consequences if the results of the toxicology tests confirm it. The seized drugs are being analyzed. For further legal steps, the results of the samples are decisive.
If you see similar incidents in your neighborhood: note the place and time, stay at a safe distance and inform the authorities. Nobody wants to end the night with a siren, but sometimes such interventions are necessary so that everyone wakes up healthy the next morning.
Update: As soon as there is new information from the police, we will report further – live from Palma, with a focus on the details that matter on site.
