Several families who have sold churros and crepes on Plaza España for generations could be shut down this year due to changes in access to the market stalls.
Churros Stands in Palma Face Uncertain Season
The scent of hot dough and sugar fills the air, and that is what makes Plaza España in the pre-Christmas season so familiar. But this year the iconic churros and crepe carts could be missing: several operators apparently did not receive permits after the access system for the Christmas market stalls was changed.
Last Thursday, the affected sellers gathered at the town hall. It's about around ten families who have been setting up their carts for decades — in some cases across generations. Some say they always had the sales rights for the pergolas at Parc de ses Estacions and were surprised: "They suddenly told us we couldn't come there anymore," one vendor said in the hall, visibly annoyed.
Why the Cancellation?
From the residents' point of view the problem is simple and at the same time annoying: noise in the evening hours and oil stains on the ground. A representative of the city administration explained that exactly these complaints had led to the reevaluation. It is also being checked how the locations affect foot traffic — especially in the alleys toward Sant Miquel and Olmos.
The market councilor in charge tried to reassure: a solution is being worked on that will secure a place for the traders. Some stalls are to be relocated to other areas in the park or near Plaza de Porta Pintada. Whether that solves the practical problems is unclear: new access points often mean longer cable routes, changed procedures for setup and dismantling, and thus additional effort for the families.
What Does This Mean for Visitors?
The Christmas market around Parc de ses Estacions normally attracts hundreds of stalls, often opening daily from 10 am to 9 pm, and besides stalls also offers carousels and sometimes an ice skating rink. If the churros stalls are missing, many visitors lose a piece of market atmosphere: steaming bags, children with sugary fingers, and the short queues in the late afternoon.
For the affected families, there's also a lot at stake: for some stalls the Christmas market is the year's busiest time. The traders demand clear criteria, real alternative offers, and above all that changes are discussed with them well in advance. The city administration says it will stay in dialogue — that sounds familiar, but whether it will be enough will likely be decided in the coming weeks.
Summary: Due to new access rules, churros and crepe stalls at Plaza España are temporarily without permits. The city is working on a relocation; affected families are alarmed. Whether the popular stalls will be back for the pre-Christmas season remains to be seen.
