Orange Weather Warning for Mallorca: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Set the Week

Aemet warns: Monday and Tuesday on Mallorca are under orange alert. Heavy rain, floods, and traffic disruptions are possible. Practical tips for everyday life.

The week starts wet: Orange alert over the island

When I looked out of the window this morning in Palma, the world looked like through a wet veil: dense clouds, wet asphalt, and the occasional gust of wind that knocked over umbrellas. Aemet has issued the orange warning — and not just for some areas, but for the entire island.

When it becomes particularly critical

Monday: From around 2:00 PM, forecasts report renewed showers and thunderstorms that could linger into the night. The first official yellow warning had already been issued in the morning, but the situation is escalating. Tuesday: From midnight to around 6:00 PM the orange alert is in effect. Expect sometimes heavy downpours, lightning and thunder — locally floods and road problems are possible.

Particularly vulnerable are low-lying streets around Palma's harbor, some access roads to Platja de Muro, and the switchbacks in the Tramuntana, where runoff can trigger small slides. I spoke with a bus driver who said: "With this water level we drive more slowly, otherwise the ride would descend into chaos."

Ibiza and Formentera also affected

The neighboring islands are not spared: Ibiza already reported floods and temporary airport shutdowns over the weekend. In Formentera there were heavy showers in places — in short, if you’re traveling in the next few days, expect delays and consider postponing trips if possible.

How long will the bad weather last?

From Wednesday, the official warnings are expected to ease according to Aemet. But that does not mean the rain will vanish immediately. For the rest of the week, rainy days are still forecast, sometimes with breaks. Temperatures remain unusually mild for the season, daytime around 24 to 26 degrees.

Practical tips for locals and guests

- Avoid flooded sections and do not park in depressions. - Secure patio furniture and flower pots — a strong gust of wind can send everything onto the street. - Check local traffic updates before you travel; detours may be in place on some country roads. - In case of power outages: keep a flashlight handy and mind the cold chain.

Apart from the Tuesday forecast, I hope the promised brief sunshine on Thursday afternoon actually comes — you can really feel how a few hours of sun can lift the mood, even if the ground is still wet.

Where to find updates

Aemet continuously publishes updates; local authorities and municipalities communicate warnings by SMS or via social media. In emergencies, call the island’s emergency numbers, and keep pets and children indoors during strong thunderstorms.

If you plan to shop today: do it in the morning. Supermarkets are open, but expect wet roads and slower deliveries. And if you plan to visit a cafe — the small corner cafe on Passeig Mallorca was particularly cozy the day before yesterday, despite the rain.

Stay careful, check local alerts, and adjust your plans. Rain can be beneficial — our water reserves will thank us — but for now: stay alert and do not underestimate.
