After heavy rainfall, several rock blocks toppled onto the winding Ma-2141 toward Sa Calobra over the weekend. The road was closed for hours; no one was injured.
Rockfall Blocks Access to Sa Calobra for Hours
\nOn Saturday morning, around 09:30 AM, motorists reported a closure on the Ma-2141 towards Sa Calobra: after heavy rainfall, several rock blocks detached from the steep wall and crashed across the road. The winding mountain road, known to many locals and visitors, was impassable in both directions.
\nLuck in misfortune: no one was injured. A coach, two cars and a van had to stop – traffic chaos, as one only expects during storms here. The impact damaged the asphalt; decorative trim and bumpers were scratched, but that was all.
\nCleanup work in poor weather
\nThe men from the island council's road authority arrived with a excavator, a cutting disc and rock hammers. Because of wet rocks and slippery approaches, the work lasted longer than usual. Workers divided the heaviest blocks on site into more manageable pieces so they could be transported away by truck. Only around 13:15 the road was clear again – so more than three and a half hours of no passage.
\nA bus driver who introduced himself only as José could be heard saying: \"You always feel a bit like on a roller coaster up here, but today it was dangerous. Fortunately, no one was on the road.\" A German tourist traveling with her rental car from Palma described the scene as \"sudden and louder than expected.\"
\n"Alice" Leaves Traces
\nThe storm, referred to locally as a tropical storm "Alice", brought water to many parts of the island in a short time. The slopes of the Serra de Tramuntana are particularly susceptible, where millennia-old limestone and slate formations lose stability in heavy rain. Rockfalls are not surprising here – they are more an unwelcome companion of the season.
\nThe authorities therefore caution: those driving toward the mountains during heavy rain should be extremely careful or postpone their trip. The Ma-2141 is famous for its switchbacks and tight passing places; when wet, they become slippery quickly.
\nLocal Memory and Outlook
\nResidents recalled similar incidents in previous years. The road is subject to regular inspections, but natural events cannot be fully prevented. The island administration is reviewing shortly whether additional safety measures at the affected spot are necessary.
\nFor anyone visiting the area in the coming days: plan patience, enjoy the view – and perhaps depart a little later. Roads like the Ma-2141 have their charm, but also their quirks. And today they reminded us that the mountains here can be unpredictable.
