From Ballermann to the Green: New Illuminated Cycle Path Connects Playa de Palma with es Pillarí

In the late afternoon, when the sun still lies warm over the promenade and voices from the beach carry into the side streets, a new section of the city network can now be discovered: A 420-meter-long cycle path connects Playa de Palma with the hamlet of es Pillarí on the other side of the motorway. Mayor Jaime Martínez recently inspected the route – the second construction phase is completed and already noticeable in everyday use.

The new section consists of two clearly distinguishable parts: 215 meters were laid outside the urban area on an unpaved surface and vary in width between about 3.5 and 5 meters; a further 205 meters run on tarmac through the urban area. Along the entire route, new accompanying plantings provide distance from motor traffic and some shade in summer. Electric lamps illuminate the inner-city part, while on the rural stretch there are energy-autonomous solar lanterns, a small gesture toward reduced energy consumption at night.

The investment amounted to just under €300,000 – for a route that appears short at first glance but makes many things easier in practice: hotel guests from Les Meravelles, Obelisco or Riu Concordia can now roll directly from the promenade noise into quieter fields, and locals can reach es Pillarí without detouring via the heavily trafficked access road. Those who enjoy the morning calm before the tourist rush will likely welcome the new connection; in the evening the lighting provides a sense of security on the way home.

Already in 2024 a first section between the village and the esplanade at house number 25 was completed. With the completion of the second phase the gap is now closed – the whole feels like a small puzzle piece that fits into a larger cycle network. On the paths one now sees families with child seats, older neighbors walking their dog, and occasionally tourist groups who prefer to explore the island by pedal rather than by bus.

What stands out on site: the accompanying plantings are not just visual protection, they also dampen traffic noise; the solar lanterns give a warm, slightly flickering light on the field path that evokes Mediterranean evenings. Bike rental shops at Playa de Palma could benefit, local cafés at the edge gain new foot traffic, and walkers discover an alternative to the promenade. It is a small relief for an area that is otherwise very busy in summer.

And because a good start invites more: the route encourages simple, practical additions. A few covered bike parking spaces at the transition to the esplanade, clear signposts toward Palma city center or a small map with recommended loops could round off the offering. Regular checks of the solar lights and plant maintenance would also be conceivable so that the new path remains attractive in the coming years.

For Mallorca such a stretch of path means more than just asphalt or gravel: it is a signal that short, well-thought-out connections can make everyday life calmer and enrich the island experience. Next time you walk along Playa de Palma, you may not only hear the waves but also discover the path that leads directly into the quiet hinterland – a simple nudge to cycle more often and to rediscover the island off the beaten track.
