First Fira del Variat in Pere Garau: Palma Tries Something New

In Pere Garau, this weekend marks the first Fira del Variat: Nine bars, live music, a children's program, and plenty of small plates featuring Mallorcan variat creations.

Palma Gets a New Street Festival — and It Smells Like Fried Dough and Spices

Anyone strolling through Pere Garau this weekend will hardly miss it: On the Plaza, the first "Fira del Variat" kicks off. That's no buzzword, but a simple, very Mallorcan idea: Small portions, different flavors, all on one plate. In short: Tapas, as we like to share at home — but this time in festival format.

What Happens, When, and Where

The main stage is on Plaza Pere Garau, with the stalls from the nine participating bars and restaurants filling the side streets. The official opening is on Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m.; things get started already on Saturday evening with a big party from 8:00 p.m. — DJ sets, street lighting, and that kind of chatting where you meet new neighbors because you accidentally ordered the same dish.

Each participating venue has announced it will prepare around 1,000 portions. So expect lines, happy faces, and the occasional surprising twist on the classic variat. I recommend arriving early, wearing sturdy shoes (the plaza is old, the ground has history), and leaving room in your stomach for at least three different plates.

For Families and the Curious

The program is intentionally varied: Live music, short performances in between, and a kids' area with painting stations and a mini cooking workshop — perfect for families who can't sit still for long. The organizers promise: No crowds like at the Ballermann, but a cozy neighborhood vibe. Sounds reasonable, but the weather is cooperating: With mild 22 degrees on Sunday, eating outdoors is pleasant anyway.

What I liked when talking to the locals: Many of the participating spots are from the neighborhood, some with decades of loyal customers. They see the festival as a chance to showcase classics while offering small experiments — variat with seafood, vegan versions, or even with a tiny, surprising sweet element.

Small Tip from a Local

Bring cash, as not all stalls accept cards. And if you try something really good: Ask for the recipe or the chef's name — people here love talking about food, and some proudly share how an old family recipe was revived.

If you're in the mood for a relaxed culinary adventure, enjoy a family atmosphere, and like sharing small plates, head to Pere Garau this weekend. I'm curious if the event will grow bigger next year — or if it stays just that: a fine, local gathering best enjoyed with friends.
