Fire, pleas for help, and the glare of headlights
Witnesses describe a scene no one wants to see: one of the vehicles was in flames, the fire department fought it with breathing apparatus and strong nozzle power. Ambulances carefully extracted the injured from the wrecks, paramedics provided initial care with blankets and oxygen masks. A taxi driver who happened to be passing by later remembered a slippery road and warning lights reflecting in the rain. "You could only hear screams and the crackling of the car," he said.
Unclear cause, investigations under way
The Guardia Civil has cordoned off the road at the scene and is now conducting investigations. Whether it was due to a risky overtaking maneuver, winter tire problems, or distraction remains unknown. Forensic teams collected splinters, brake marks and personal belongings; an expert was requested. Police are asking for tips from drivers who traveled the route at night.
The stretch along PM-401, near kilometer point 7 â a winding road used by many locals and tourists. Local residents say that at night speed is often too high there, especially after hotel shift changes and on summer nights when taxis and delivery vehicles are on the road.
Municipality expresses its concern
Porto Cristo and Manacor are in shock. The mayor's office and emergency pastoral care have been informed; helpers are offering support to relatives. On site there were later simple flowers and candles along the roadside; neighbors spoke of tears and a feeling of helplessness. The identities of the victims are currently being verified, relatives should be notified as soon as possible.
