GOB Files a Complaint: Dispute Over Expensive Premium Loungers in Cala Major

The environmental group GOB has filed a complaint against operators in Cala Major: prices are too high and alleged violations of local permits are at issue.

GOB Takes Action Against High Beach Prices in Cala Major

\n

In the early morning, even before the first beach umbrellas unfold, you often see in Cala Major the same scenes: tourists strolling along the promenade, vendors carrying coffee cups, and beach operators setting up loungers. Now the environmental organization GOB is intervening and has officially filed complaints against several operators. The reason: prices and apparently non-compliance with regulations.

What exactly is being criticized

\n

According to GOB, around a hundred sets were offered on the beach as 'Premium' — significantly more expensive than the officially allowed rate. While a normal combination of two loungers and one parasol is officially listed at around €18 per day, on-site offers were observed up to €70 for allegedly exclusive equipment.

In addition, the organization criticizes that the kiosks and setup areas do not maintain the mandated minimum distance of 100 meters from one another. The accusations concern both the pricing policy and possible deviations from municipal permit conditions.

How residents and visitors react

\n

A vendor at the edge of the promenade told me yesterday that many tourists, when looking at the price signs, swallow hard. 'Last week a family from Germany asked whether it is really that expensive — and then spread out their own towels instead,' she says. Such small everyday observations show that local perception is indeed heated, even if during the day it often seems quiet.

What GOB expects

\n

The environmental organization now calls on the coastal authority to review the cases and, if necessary, recheck or revoke licenses. It comes down to two things: transparency in pricing and compliance with the permits that establish publicly-law conditions.

\n\n

Whether the authority will act promptly remains to be seen. For the season, this means: operators may face inspections, beach users should check prices carefully, and people in the neighborhood are already discussing whether clearer signage or an official price seal would help.

I will continue to monitor developments — preferably over a coffee on the promenade, listening, asking questions, and reporting when something decisive happens.
