On Saturday, the La Misericòrdia cultural center in Palma will transform into a sweet workshop: From 5 to 8 PM there are free tastings, live-baking actions, and stories from local bakers.
An afternoon full of dough, sugar, and good vibes
\nIf you stroll through the district around the La Misericòrdia cultural center on Saturday evening, you might hear the soft clatter of baking sheets, the laughter of children, and the aroma of freshly baked goods wafting through the streets. From 5 to 8 PM, Palma invites for the second time to the Festival of Confectioneries and Bakeries – a blend of market, show kitchen, and a small trip back in time into the island tradition.
\nWhat you can expect
\nEnsaimadas, almond cake, coca de patata and more – the classics of Mallorcan baking take center stage. But it is not only about tasting: craftsmen and pastry chefs show live how they knead, shape and glaze their doughs. I was there last year, standing at a small table where an elderly baker formed his dough knots into gigantic ensaimadas. The hands moved almost as if by themselves. Simply beautiful to watch.
\nThe highlight: Admission is free. You stroll from stall to stall, try a piece here, nibble a bite there, and perhaps linger over a small glass of Mallorcan coffee. For families this is perfect – the children can often watch or help with decorating. At peak times it can become tight, but that is part of it. A tip from me: come around 5 PM, before the big evening rush begins.
\nRegional bakers, small anecdotes
\nMany of the participants are local craft businesses that have been baking in the villages for years or even generations. People tell stories about secret recipes that are only pulled out on Sundays, or grandmothers who still work with wood-fired ovens. This mix of old and new makes the festival likable and honest – not a sterile fair, but a real neighborhood event.
\nThe whole thing is organized by the Island Council. The atmosphere is relaxed: seating, a few street musicians, children enjoying ice cream, and the inevitable visitors taking photos – because that is how it is done nowadays. If you come by bus, ideally get off near Passeig Born and walk five to ten minutes. Parking nearby can be tricky, especially when the sun is still low.
\nWhy a visit is worthwhile
\nBecause it makes you happy. Because you discover new flavor profiles. And because it is a rare opportunity to speak with bakers in person. Especially if you live on Mallorca, these events are small anchors that remind us of tradition and daily life – between tourist crowds and fast-trend cafés.
\nSo: put on comfortable shoes, bring an appetite, and plan to spare a little time. On Saturday evening, from 5 to 8 PM, La Misericòrdia transforms into a small baking oasis. Free. Lively. Delicious. And very Mallorcan.
