Due to an orange weather warning, several public parks in Palma are temporarily closed. Authorities advise staying indoors and avoiding footpaths.
Public green spaces in Palma temporarily closed
\nMorning mood in the city was noticeably calmer than usual: rain beat on the rooftops of the old town, and some trees swayed in the wind. The Palma City Council has therefore decided to temporarily close several parks and promenades today. Affected include, among others, Parc de Bellver and the stretch along the Paseo Sagrera. Barrier tapes and signs have been placed at the entrances.
\nWhy the measures?
\nThe reason is an official severe weather warning at orange level that is in effect for the island until 6:00 PM today. Meteorologically, forecasts expect heavy rain and sometimes strong thunderstorms with locally high rainfall amounts. This increases the danger of flooded paths, falling branches, and slippery surfaces â reasons the city deems sufficient to close the recreational areas.
\nI was near Bellver just before 9 AM: the paths look wet and empty, a bundle of papers lay on a park bench, the dog walker in a yellow raincoat quickly disappeared back toward Carrer de Sa Riera. All this may seem harmless until you think of places where water collects and paths slip away.
\nImpact and guidance
\nThe closures affect not only pedestrians. Jogging routes and smaller access points for residents are partly blocked as well. The city recommends avoiding large green spaces, not entering parks, and not leaving vehicles in low-lying areas. Pedestrians are asked to temporarily use covered alleys or public transport.
\nIn the streets around the affected parks, residents reported that some sidewalks had been cordoned off. Near Plaça de España and along the Ma-20, there were already swift teams this morning removing obstacles and posting warning signs.
\nBalearics respond after heavy rainfall
\nIn parallel to the closures on Mallorca, an operation to clear damage is underway on Ibiza after severe floods. The regional government has activated an emergency plan there: watercourses are cleaned, vehicles recovered from riverbeds, and access routes to residential areas cleared and opened under control. Experience shows such measures are often quickly needed when water finds its way.
\nIn Palma, no major damage of this kind has been reported so far. Nevertheless, precautionary road closures and the park closures seem to be effective: they aim to prevent small incidents from turning into bigger hazards.
\nWhat you should do
\nOur recommendation, short and to the point: Stay informed. Listen to local announcements, follow the city's social media channels, and respect cordons. If possible, postpone walks until after the warning level is lifted. For emergencies, as always: call 112.
\nWe will keep you updated if the situation changes. Until then: pack an umbrella, drive slowly, and avoid unnecessary journeys â this is the best way to get through the day on dry feet.
