A mishap with a transport buggy created a large puddle in Terminal C. Passengers were redirected, and the airport cordoned off a section.

Curious incident in the morning at Terminal C

On Thursday morning, an unusual incident occurred in Palma de Mallorca Airport's Terminal C: a stand-by water hose burst after being bumped by an employee with a small transport buggy. The incident occurred near Gate C46 — the area many flights to Germany depart from.

How it happened

According to eyewitnesses, the employee was reversing to move people with limited mobility. While maneuvering, the buggy apparently touched a utility line, which tore. Suddenly water sprayed with considerable force across the floor—and within seconds a wide puddle formed, through which travelers had to wade.

'I stood there with my suitcases and suddenly my shoes were wet,' said a traveler on the way to check-in. 'It looked like a small fountain was coming out of the ground.'

Rapid reaction, but visible consequences

Airport staff secured the affected area and directed passengers along alternative routes to their gates. Cleaning crews were on the scene within minutes; nevertheless the area remained slippery and uncomfortable for a long time. According to observers, there were only minor delays for some flights—no major cancellations were reported.

The operator was asked for a statement, but did not respond initially. On-site staff said safety precautions had taken effect and there were no injuries.

Not a one-off this season

The incident is part of a series of small and large incidents at the airport: during the summer there were several floods due to heavy rainfall, and at various points on the construction site there were reports of damage. For many frequent travelers, this has reinforced the sense that something unexpected happens more often these days.

My tip if you are flying soon: arrive at the airport a little earlier and pack sturdy shoes — you never know. And yes, at Gate C46 you should watch out for splashing sounds.

The incident did not result in major injuries; police were not needed. Cleaning and technical inspection continued into the afternoon.
