After a handbag theft at Bellver Castle, a frantic pursuit through Palma ends with police stopping the car at a traffic light – the vehicle contained more than just the loot.

Bustle in Palma: Pursuit ends abruptly at the traffic light

It was one of those typical late-summer days in Palma, around 10:30 a.m., when the quiet along Passeig Marítim briefly disappeared. According to witnesses, tourists at Bellver Castle noticed that a handbag was missing. Not long after, a patrol from the Policía Local picked up the trail — and a high-speed chase through the city began.

Stop at the intersection by the Congress Palace

The escape ended surprisingly uneventfully: at a red light beside the Congress Palace, the fleeing car became stuck. Eyewitnesses say the vehicle weaved between lanes before the police could bring it to a stop at the red light. The driver, according to initial investigations, is a man from Romania who told the officers he had been involved in the theft.

On the scene, the authorities found more: in the car were items that, according to further investigations, originate from earlier similar crimes. Additionally, the police found a small bag with a white substance, preliminarily classified as cocaine.

Bellver, a tourist destination, as a recurring site for incidents

Bellver Castle is a popular photo spot, and that makes it attractive to pickpockets: between selfies and souvenir shopping, a moment of inattention is often enough. The local police have warned for years: keep bags closed, separate money and passports, do not leave everything on beach chairs. In September, when the weather is still warm and the streets are crowded, such incidents increase.

An older resident on the Passeig Marítim dryly noted: "They quickly see when people lose their rhythm – five seconds, and something is gone." Such lines are heard here more often. Sometimes these are organized groups, sometimes solo offenders, say the investigators.

What consequences await the detained?

The man was provisionally arrested. Investigations are ongoing for theft; in addition, it is being checked whether the found substance leads to drug charges. The police are also examining whether the stolen property comes from other cases. Tourists who were at Bellver yesterday and are missing something are asked to contact the Policía Local.

For locals, the scene is a reminder to stay vigilant. For visitors, caution is not mistrust but smart everyday precautions. And for everyone along the Passeig Marítim, perhaps another tip: hold onto your bag briefly for the next photo.
