After a salmonella outbreak, dozens of guests fell ill, several had to be hospitalized. The sushi restaurant at Playa de Palma is closed, and those affected plan to take legal action against the operator.
Playa de Palma in Turmoil: Guests Fall Ill After Restaurant Visit
\nIn recent days, reports from guests who fell ill after visiting a sushi restaurant at Playa de Palma have increased. According to health authorities, around 43 infections are involved, with twelve people requiring hospitalization. The establishment on Calle Marbella has been temporarily closed.
\nWhat the inspections revealed
\nInspectors found deficiencies during routine inspections that, in their assessment, could be related to the outbreak: food did not appear to be stored continuously in safe temperature ranges; there were also complaints about kitchen hygiene and maintenance work. Samples were sent to the lab to determine the cause more precisely.
\nThose affected call for consequences
\nSix guests have already filed criminal complaints against the operators. Their complaints range from several days of missed work to hospital stays â some describe more than ten days with severe stomach and bowel symptoms. The complaints aim to clarify responsibilities and to have possible violations of public health regulations examined in court.
\nThe authorities have set a ten-day deadline: the operator must fix the identified deficiencies and present a hygiene concept, otherwise the closure remains in effect. Court and social-medical documents should be incorporated into the proceedings so that investigators can form a complete picture.
\nA look back: similar cases
\nThe incident recalls a previous salmonella outbreak in 2019 that affected another branch of the same chain. At that time, considerably more people were affected and legal action followed. Such repetitions provoke anger and mistrust on the island, especially among residents and regulars who rely on clean standards.
\nI was at Playa de Palma yesterday late afternoon and heard the city police talking with the health department â people on the beach exchanged messages, the mood was tense, some joked, others were visibly worried. Such incidents are not welcome here: for many, the gastronomy scene is part of quality of life and daily life, not just a vacation experience.
\nWhat is important now
\nFor guests: if you have symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, contact a doctor immediately and, if possible, mention the restaurant visit. Authorities also advise paying attention to hygiene and, if in doubt, keep photos or receipts for possible complaints. Investigations are ongoing, and whether further legal steps will be taken depends on lab results and the evaluation of health records.
\nWe will keep you updated as soon as there are new developments.
