Santa Ponsa Breathes Art: Minkner Gallery Celebrates Opening with Tsantekidou & Safronow

Chairs, sparkling wine glasses and quiet conversations – the gallery becomes a meeting place again

On Thursday evening the Galería de Arte Minkner in Santa Ponsa filled up; the air outside smelled of the sea, glasses clinked inside, and from near the promenade one could still hear the sound of the waves. Many visitors – Mallorcans, residents of Calvià and a few holidaymakers – stayed longer than planned because the works held something you did not want to let go of immediately: a mix of calm, figure studies and colorful snapshots.

On show are new works by Ira Tsantekidou and Wlad Safronow. The opening was relaxed, lively and personal: over vino and cava conversations arose directly in front of the paintings, artists and visitors stood shoulder to shoulder, and it was clear that the gallery here is more than a display case – it is both a meeting point and a space for conversation.

Gallery owner Lutz Minkner put it succinctly: "You can't live without art – whether it's dance, music or painting." That was not an empty phrase that evening but the common thread behind many conversations. Collectors thumbed through artists' notes, neighbors from the street exchanged chatter, and a young pupil took the time to really follow the brushstrokes; similar neighbor‑led creative moments have happened during open studio weekends like Porto Pi as an Open Studio: A Weekend of Color, Sound and Neighbors.

About the artists: Ira Tsantekidou, born in 1967, began with a solid education at a school for fine arts, later studied art and architecture and initially worked as an architect. Since 1992 she has been freelance; her studio in Thessaloniki has existed since the mid-1990s. In her paintings she searches for the "quiet, fleeting moments of human existence" – beach impressions, city views and striking portraits of women that play with a delicate emotionality.

Wlad Safronow, born in 1965 in Kharkiv, has his roots in academic teaching: studies at the Academy of Art and Design, later teaching painting and graphics, leading an artist group and working as a gallery professional. Since the 1990s he has lived in Germany and works as a freelance artist; his style oscillates between careful realism and an almost fairytale-like visual language. People, animals and urban scenes give his works a narrative depth.

The exhibition offers a pleasant range: from delicate, atmospheric sketches to richly colored paintings that linger in the mind for a while. For those who could not be there that evening: the show is on view at the Galería de Arte Minkner until May 23 — a good reason for an evening walk along the Santa Ponsa promenade, followed by a visit to the gallery.

Such evenings are important for Santa Ponsa. The community lives from the sea, from tourism and from small, reliable meeting places; a gallery that fosters artistic conversations brings neighbors together, gives young people access to art and ensures that the place is perceived not only as a sunbathing spot but also as a cultural space, as discussed in Mountains or Sea? Two Art Nights, Two Moods — Esporles vs. Ses Salines.

My personal impression at the gallery bar: an older couple discussed color choices, a student took photos of details for his sketchbook, and outside a vendor strolled by with Mediterranean herbs. This is the kind of authenticity you cannot buy in any press release — it emerges when art and everyday life meet.

If you're tempted: plan an evening in Santa Ponsa. The exhibition invites you to stay longer, ask questions and maybe take a small work home. Such openings are a reminder that Mallorca is not just beaches and parties — events such as Nit de l'Art 2025: Palma Between Gallery Glamour and Crowds also show how neighbors, tourists and artists come together quietly, but no less meaningful.
