Savannah off Mallorca's West Coast: Film Yacht and Floating Piece of Architecture

On Tuesday morning an unusual visitor drew attention off Mallorca's west coast: the megayacht Savannah. For those who often look out to sea from the breakwater at Port d'Andratx or while walking through Deià, it was one of those scenes usually only seen in pictures – a slender hull, large expanses of glass and the metallic gleam in the sun.

The facts are clear: the Savannah measures 83.5 meters, was completed in 2015 at the Dutch shipyard Feadship and is equipped with a hybrid drive. Technically it can reach up to 17 knots; in cruising mode it's usually around 14 knots. Up to twelve guests can be accommodated on board, attended by about 22 crew members – a ratio that explains the level of comfort such a yacht promises.

Film fans on the island recognized the Savannah immediately: in 2025 it served as a backdrop for the Netflix thriller, in which it appeared, among other things, as the chic but enigmatic ship called 'Nordlicht'. Some exterior shots were indeed filmed on the water; other scenes were recreated in the studio. The film itself, however, fell out of the spotlight and is currently no longer permanently available on the platform.

A small detail not to be overlooked: the Savannah has an underwater observation lounge. If you imagine life on a yacht as a pool party on the sun deck, you'll be proven otherwise here. Even marine life can be observed from comfortable leather benches – a special kind of closeness to the Mediterranean.

The yacht previously belonged to Canadian businessman Lukas Lundin. In 2025 it changed hands to a buyer based in Europe; names were not disclosed. Its market value is estimated at at least around 100 million dollars. Such figures are abstract, whereas the image the Savannah presents is very concrete: boats moor, fishermen unpack their nets, children point with outstretched fingers at the gleaming vessel.

On site, at the Paseo Marítimo in Port d'Andratx, the usual morning scene mixed with the unfamiliar: coffee cups clinked, seagulls cried, the heat already hung over the water. Strollers stopped, older gentlemen in shorts and sun hats exchanged anecdotes about earlier encounters with celebrity yachts. Such things bring conversation to the harbor wall – and sometimes also a photo job for the local boat charter shop.

Why is this good news for Mallorca? Not because the yacht owner gives anything away here, but because such appearances generate attention. Visitors take a closer look, ask at the harbor about berths, perhaps book an island tour. Marinas and suppliers profit from services, provisions and craftsmanship. The island is not only beach and hotel, but also a filming location and a stage for maritime technology and design.

At the same time it's a small reminder of how versatile the coast is: from traditional fishing boats to the comparatively quiet hybrid drives of modern yachts. The Savannah, with its comparatively environmentally friendly propulsion, is a symbol that technology also plays a role in this luxury segment.

So those who wanted to see the yacht didn't have to look far. A morning at the harbor, a glance out toward the open sea, and there it was. For the people who live here, such encounters are a pleasant contrast to everyday life: a bit of film glamour, a bit of technology, and the sea as a backdrop.

A small appeal to bathers and walkers

If you are on the west shore in the coming days: stay on the marked paths and respect the safety zones. Yachts like the Savannah are private; curious glances are allowed, boarding is not. And if a fisherman tells you something about the boat – listen. The stories that circulate along the waterfront belong to the island just like the smell of the sea and fresh bread from the baker.

The Savannah may disappear as quickly as it came. But the moment when children stare at the quay and elderly ladies over coffee tell the film story with the famous yacht remains. For a few hours Mallorca was a little closer to that sleek, cinematic world – and that shows: the island still has the ability to provide small everyday wonders.
