Within a few hours, a storm hit Ibiza: up to 200 liters per square meter of rain, flooding streets, and prompting closures of shops and schools.
Heavy rainfall turns parts of Ibiza into lakes
\nLast night it poured here really hard. Within just under two hours, in some parts of the island up to 200 liters per square meter fell â enough for streets in Ibiza Town to be underwater within minutes. Those heading to the Old Town of Dalt Vila or the Marina this morning saw wet footprints, muddy driveways and cardboard boxes pulled out of flooded shops.
\nThe images always look the same: cars stuck in puddles, garage doors underwater and a small coastal gym whose changing rooms are still completely soaked today. In several neighborhoodsâfrom Figueretes to the area around Playa d'en Bossa â water even seeped into ground-floor flats.
\nRed alert, mobile warning messages
\nAt times the island was under the highest warning level. Many residents received a warning on their smartphones in the evening urging them to keep doors and windows closed and avoid dangerous streets. Local emergency services also asked residents to report extraordinary situations only via emergency number and not to block rescue routes.
\nThe government dispatched the military unit UME with heavy vehicles and hundreds of personnel to provide assistance. Temporary pumps were installed on affected streets, volunteers distributed sandbags and the fire service helped drivers trapped inside cars. Official sources report that so far no deaths have been recorded, but the situation remains tense.
\nSchools closed, cleanup underway
\nMany schools on Ibiza remain closed today. Parents said they were informed yesterday evening by SMS from schools. Some bus routes operated only partially; traffic jams formed at roundabouts and in underground garages. Cleanup work continued through the night: leaves, debris and oil traces had to be cleared so the streets could be passable again.
\nIn the neighborhoods you can now see the second phase: not the water, but the dirt. Residents sweep stairs and entrances, shop owners clear shelves and some cafes serve the first espresso of the day outside, with wet chairs and improvised drainage â typical island life, Iâd say.
\nWhat you should know now
\nIf you are on Ibiza: avoid flooded streets, do not park in underground garages in low-lying areas, and check local warnings. Keep an eye on your neighbors â older people and families with young children often need help with cleanup.
\nThe weather service continues to warn of scattered, heavy showers, even as the situation gradually calms. Authorities recommend following official channels and local radio stations. Weâll stay updated and report as soon as there is new information.
\nIf you are affected and need help: contact local emergency numbers or the municipal operations centers.
