Steve Buscemi receiving the Evolution Icon Award at the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival in Palma

Steve Buscemi is coming to Palma: A New Yorker brings Hollywood flair to EMIFF

On October 21, the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival will present Steve Buscemi with the Evolution Icon Award. More than a red carpet: the festival screens 130 films, spotlights local productions from the Balearic Islands, and turns Palma into a meeting place for the film world for a few autumn days.

A New York actor brings a piece of Hollywood to the bay

On Passeig Mallorca, between steaming espresso cups and delivery boxes, the news feels almost surreal: Steve Buscemi, that New York character actor with the crooked expression, is coming to Palma in October (Steve Buscemi llega a Palma: Icon Award en el Evolution Mallorca Filmfestival). On October 21 he is due to receive the Evolution Icon Award at the Palau de Congressos of the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival — a small spectacle that will bathe the city in cinematic mood for a few days.

When, where, how Palma changes

The opening gala in the evening will feel different from an ordinary autumn walk: people speaking different languages, the clatter of scaffolding somewhere behind the harbor, a seagull circling above Passeig Mallorca. From the Hotel Portitxol to the Teatre Principal, locals and festival guests mix, and for a few hours Palma breathes cinema. It is not Cannes, but that is exactly the appeal — approachable, a little improvised, with the smell of sea and coffee beans in the air.

Buscemi, his film and the programme

Steve Buscemi's biography on Wikipedia shows a career built on offbeat roles; he is not the classic Hollywood star — he is the man for edges and quirks, the roles that linger. His presence gives the festival an additional layer of credibility, and his career is catalogued on Steve Buscemi on IMDb. The programme also features his current film Psycho Therapy; in total EMIFF screens around 130 films, from Spanish classics to experimental shorts. That makes for a dense week of screenings, Q&As and surprising encounters in the corridors of the Palau.

Guests, honors and local voices

Besides Buscemi other names are expected: Ingrid García Jonsson will receive an emerging talent award, cinematographer Phedon Papamichael will present a special screening, and director Julio Medem will show one of his earlier works. Festival founder Sandra Lipski describes the selection as “strong” — a short, sympathetic affirmation that you might accompany with a second espresso in the street cafés.

Made in Baleares: a window for local filmmakers

A particularly important part of the festival is the Made in Baleares section. Around fifty productions from the region are screened — shorts, documentaries, daring pieces from young filmmakers. For the local scene it is more than a screening: it is a chance to perform in front of neighbors, friends and international guests. Someone who otherwise only fills festival halls during the island's summer can suddenly step into the spotlight here.

Why this is more than an event for Mallorca

A film festival not only brings visitors to hotels, it creates encounters and networks. Local crews make contacts, emerging directors find mentors, and the city shows itself culturally open — between fishing boats and construction sites. Economically it's a few good weeks for bars and cinemas, but culturally something more substantial arises: a place where stories are told and shared.

Ironically: for a few days the island is allowed to be a small piece of the film world. And if soon you lift your espresso on Passeig Mallorca, you might not immediately see a Hollywood star — but almost certainly a New Yorker preparing for the evening.
