The Balearic government launches 'Bonos de Producto Local': Over 100 participating shops. A quick look at how the system works and what buyers should pay attention to.
Shop for 10 euros, goods worth 20 euros: How it works
\nThe Balearics are back with a promotion that makes you feel like the bill is right – at least for shoppers. From now on, more than 100 local shops will participate in so-called "Bonos de Producto Local": When you redeem a voucher, you get goods worth 20 euros but actually pay only 10 euros. It sounds almost too good to be true, but it works.
\n\nWhere and how to get the vouchers
\nThe vouchers are issued directly at participating merchants. Usually a quick check is enough: show your ID and your NIE number, and the discount is applied. Some stores have considerably more activity in the morning – I saw a small vegetable seller on Plaça yesterday morning, five to six people were queuing. Practical: Up to six vouchers can be redeemed per person. Whether you use them all at one store or distribute across several is up to you.
\n\nWho is participating?
\nMany small grocery stores, some wineries and direct marketers are on board. Especially for nearby winemakers this is an opportunity to sell their wines directly to neighbors and weekend market visitors. On the official participant list (which is publicly viewable online) there are thrift-like shops in villages and traders in larger cities – in Palma as well as in smaller communities.
\n\nA few everyday tips
\nIf you head out tomorrow: bring your ID and, if available, your NIE number on paper or digitally. Ask in advance whether the shop is particularly busy in the morning or afternoon. And plan for the fact that with very cheap offers the sales floor can fill up quickly – not a surprise, I know from similar promotions in the past.
\n\nWhy all this? In short: The promotion aims to support local producers, keep purchasing power on the island, and bolster small traders before the cold season. For many of them, extras like these vouchers are a worthwhile immediate helper without much administrative effort.
\n\nWhat to watch out for
\nThe conditions are simple but important: The vouchers only apply at the advertised sales points. Look for notices in the storefront or ask at the checkout. And: As with any subsidy, there can be differences in handling – some businesses only accept cash for the remaining payment, others are more flexible and accept cards.
\n\nI think it's a good opportunity to support your favorite baker again, take home a bottle of wine from the area, or discover new small producers unexpectedly. A little queuing, a few conversations with neighbors, and in the end a full basket – this is how I imagine family shopping on the Balearics on a Saturday morning.
\n\nMore information and the full list of participating shops can be found on the program page of the promotion.
