In the Church Garden: Christian Yoga in Arenal Starts – Monthly Sessions with Pastor Olivia Scheib
An offering for body, breath and small spiritual impulses – from March 26, every fourth Thursday
The small green oasis behind the parish house in Arenal will soon receive new visitors: starting Thursday, March 26, Pastor Olivia Scheib will invite people once a month to yoga sessions that deliberately combine physical practice with calm Christian reflections. Each session begins at 6:30 pm and takes place on the fourth Thursday of the month. Participation is free; those who wish may leave a donation in the collection hat.
The scene is easy to imagine: a row of mats under shady trees, the last children lingering on the curb as they stroll along the Passeig, and the golden evening light slowly falling over the beach of S'Arenal. If the weather is good, the sessions take place in the parish garden; in cool or rainy weather they move into the community room. No registration is required – just roll out your mat and join in.
The concept is explicitly aimed at people with different levels of experience. Beginners are welcome, as are those who practice regularly. The focus is on gentle body exercises, breathing techniques and moments of quiet. Short Christian reflections and prayer moments are added to help connect the practice space with life off the mat. Those looking for a quiet end to a busy workday will find room for that here. Affordable local classes are common, as noted in Casals de barri: Registration starts on September 13.
A few practical tips from the congregation: bring a mat, a blanket and comfortable clothing, and don't forget water. Evenings in March can still be chilly – a light jacket is recommended. Meeting point is the parish house on Calle Bellavista No. 3, Ses Cadenes (S'Arenal); questions can be directed to Olivia Scheib by email at info@kirche-balearen.net.
Pastor Scheib was born in 1996 and comes from Saarland. She is accompanying the congregation as a guest pastor for one year. In addition to studying biblical languages, she apparently has a fondness for bodywork: for her, yoga is not a contradiction to the Christian faith but a means of bringing body and soul to rest together. That is the idea behind the new offering – a practice that gives strength while also encouraging inward reflection.
Why the offering fits Mallorca well: the island is not only a holiday destination but home for many who try to find balance with little time and often varied daily routines. Low-threshold events like this make use of existing parish spaces and open them to neighbors, residents, newcomers and guests. Local retreats and gatherings reflect this interest, for example the Yoga del Mar Spirit Festival in Llubí, and similar enrollment schemes are promoted in Palma's casals open enrollment: Courses from €2.
It is not just about sport or religion alone. In a small congregation like the one in Arenal, such activities are also social hubs: people know each other, they see the same faces again and exchange ideas. For many, garden yoga becomes a new everyday routine – half an hour for breath and body that gives the rest of the day a different tone. For the congregation, it is an invitation to share its courtyard as a public space.
If you are thinking about using the offering: just come, preferably a little earlier to find a spot. If you arrive by car, there is parking in the side streets; if you come from the beach, enjoy a short walk through Ses Cadenes. The door is open to all denominations and the curious; those who want to stay after the session can chat with others over tea.
It is a small, local project without much fuss but with real everyday benefit: an opportunity to find calm in community, breathe the evening air of Mallorca and bring body and mind into a little more order. That is exactly what makes offerings like this attractive to many on the island.
