Christian Yoga in S'Arenal: Pastor Connects Body and Faith
In the community hall of S'Arenal a colorful mix of residents and guests meets: Pastor Olivia Scheib offers Christian yoga once a month — a calm, down-to-earth practice with breathing exercises, Bible words and shared silence.
Christian Yoga in S'Arenal: Pastor Connects Body and Faith
A bright parish hall, a small kitchenette, the view of a little garden – this is how the first yoga class recently offered by a German pastor in Mallorca began on a mild evening. Inside there is the smell of freshly washed mats; outside you can hear the distant rumble of buses heading for Palma and the chirping of sparrows. The atmosphere: relaxed, almost family-like.
Olivia Scheib, originally from the Saarland and working since October with the German-speaking Protestant congregation in the Balearic Islands, invites people every fourth Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. for an evening practice. Participants come from different backgrounds: residents who live here and holidaymakers who want to add some calm and movement to their trip. That evening a woman from East Frisia was among those present; a short conversation about hometowns brought laughter into the room – community forms quickly.
Scheib calls the offer "Christian yoga." In concrete terms this means: classic physical exercises and a flowing sequence of movements in which breath and movement run in sync – often called a "flow" in yoga – are combined with brief, encouraging words from the Christian faith. It is not about performance. The invitation is simple: listen to your own body, feel and respect your limits. Those in pain modify the posture. Those who feel a stretch may stay a little longer.
Music plays subtly in the background, often just a quiet piano. In the pose that yoga teachers call the "Tree," Scheib sometimes reads a short Bible verse. At the end of the session participants take time for a guided relaxation – and close the shared practice with a prayer. Thus, bodily mindfulness and religious reflection merge into a quiet, personal experience.
For Scheib it is important not to regard the practice as detached from its historical origins: yoga has roots that are millennia old and lie in the spiritual traditions of India. Today, however, the physical component is often in the foreground in many places, whether at local studios or at events such as Yoga del Mar Spirit Festival in Llubí. The variant in S'Arenal respects this origin but connects it with a Christian view of the human being: the body as a gift to be treated with care.
For the small congregation the offering has a practical benefit: the parish hall is used flexibly on several evenings a week – from cooking circles to afternoon meet-ups and sports activities. Such activities keep spaces lively and bring together people who might otherwise never have met. In a season that warmed up late because of a long winter, moving the first session indoors was a pragmatic solution – a sign that parish work here also works with improvisation.
Why is this good for Mallorca? Because it is a simple, low-cost way to care for body and soul equally. For residents who do not want to make a big effort every week, and for guests who seek something familiar during their holiday, the format offers a low threshold: register via WhatsApp at +49 177 3315520, the course is free, donations are welcome, or consider nearby options such as the small Mallorca Mindful Movement studio in Can Pastilla. Bring a mat, open ears and a bit of curiosity.
As an idea for the coming months: in warmer weather meetings in the garden would be conceivable, perhaps a short, open session on Sunday afternoon after coffee and cake. Such small rituals strengthen neighborhoods; they are not a replacement for church, but an invitation to experience faith in a practical, embodied way.
If you're curious: the door in S'Arenal is open. One evening, a few breaths, a sentence from the Bible – and perhaps a new anchor in everyday life.
Dates & Contact: Every 4th Thursday of the month, 6:30 p.m. Register via WhatsApp at +49 177 3315520. Free, donations welcome.
