In Palmas casals de barri, registration for the new course program has started today: yoga, cooking, computer courses, and more — affordable, local, and often barrier-free.
Now it's happening: Enrollment in Palmas' neighborhood centers
Today, September 17, 2025, neighbors can again register in Palmas casals de barri for the autumn and winter courses. I stopped by this morning at Centro de Barrio in La Soledad — by 9:00 there was already a small group on site, they drank coffee, swapped tips for the cooking class and dryly commented: \"Finally yoga again, the back says thank you.\"
What is offered and how expensive it is
The offering reads as practical: Yoga, various dance classes, Spanish and English courses, cooking (Mallorcan home cooking if you like), computer courses for beginners and advanced, as well as creative workshops. Many courses cost only about €2 per hour. Sounds almost too good to be true — the town hall is strongly supporting the centers.
Registration: On-site or online, but for now only one course
Registration is now possible — either directly at the respective neighborhood center or via the online portal the city provides. Important: At first, each person may only choose one course, so that as many people as possible can participate. Sounds fair, especially in smaller centers like Son Gotleu, where spaces are limited.
Practical tip: If you want multiple courses, a visit on-site is worthwhile. Some Casas post additional waiting lists; sometimes spaces move up when courses are not full.
Accessibility, times and first courses
Many centers have barrier-free access, and the course offering is deliberately diverse: mornings with gentle gymnastics for older neighbors, afternoons with language courses, and evening creative meetups. Courses usually start in October, many run as ten- to twelve-week series. Most meetings take place once a week, and spots fill quickly at popular times (Tuesday evening, Friday afternoon).
Why this matters
For me this is more than just a hobby: these centers are meeting points. Here you not only learn a language or a skill, you meet people from the street, share recipes, borrow books from the small library, or organize a neighborhood festival. Maria, a volunteer from Santa Catalina, said: \"For many older people this is the day they leave the house.\"
How to sign up
All information and the full program can be found online — the portal lists times, places and available seats. If you prefer to ask in person: drop by your nearest casal, the staff are usually very helpful and often speak Spanish, Catalan, and English. And yes: take your ID card with you — you will need it when signing up.
A small note at the end: because demand is high, acting early pays off. I saw a young man at 10:30 a.m. trying his luck — no free spots left in the computer course, but he was put on the waiting list. Maybe it will work out on the second try.
