You can tell immediately when you pass the town hall square: The fountain is now only sparking sparsely, the gardeners keep hoses ready but not used. Mayor Bernat Isern said the decision was necessary because groundwater reserves had not been adequately replenished after a dry summer and only sporadic showers. Especially the source s'Ull de s'Aiguo, which supplies many households, currently provides significantly less water.

The list of prohibitions is quite concrete: No refilling private pools with drinking water, no garden irrigation, and no car washing with tap water. Decorative ornamental fountains also remain dry. The supply of animals in small stables is restricted; large agricultural operations are not directly affected – that is the official formulation.

In the village there are rumors that in case of further deterioration, temporary outages in remote settlements could be possible. That means: no shower in the evening when the tank is empty. Isern emphasized that they want to avoid that, but also honest that options remain open.

An older resident on Carrer Major shook his head: "We have learned to save water, but visitors don't always understand." Indeed the municipality notes high consumption peaks on weekends when excursionists come and refresh themselves in small holiday homes.

Practical tips for locals and guests

The administration recommends simple things: shower shorter (five minutes), collect rainwater for plants, run the dishwasher only when full, and deliberately forgo filling the pool. At several places in the village there are now notice boards with consumption numbers and saving tips.

Weather models promise some rain for the coming weekend, but reservoirs need time to recover. Until then the rules remain in force – and the mood in Estellencs is a mix of concern and pragmatic action: save water, stand together, and hope the clouds deliver.
