In the night leading into Sunday, the quiet rural road between Manacor and Portocristo turned into a scene of catastrophe. Around 1 a.m., two cars collided head-on. Two men, 27 and 38 years old, could not be saved. For the families, a difficult time begins. Four more involved suffered injuries, one person remains in critical condition.

What It Might Have Looked Like

Eye witnesses described a brief, panicked moment: a flash, then smoke and the distinctive hiss of tires. One of the vehicles caught fire, flames rose high before all occupants could exit. Firefighters, the Civil Guard and ambulances were quickly on the scene. The responders extinguished the fire and rescued the injured, but two men later died at the Manacor hospital.

Major Response in the Early Hours

On site, a frantic mood: blue lights on glowing asphalt, the smell of extinguishing foam and gasoline, voices shouting instructions. The road was closed for hours, scene examination and investigators worked by flashlight. Early indications suggest that one vehicle may have veered into the oncoming lane — why remains unclear. Alcohol or driver error are being checked, as well as technical defects and road conditions.

Alarming Series of Accidents

Especially painful: This crash is not isolated. Within a week there have been five deadly traffic accidents on Mallorca. Previously, two motorcyclists and an elderly female driver died. The cluster has left the island in shock. Debates about speed limits, poorly lit side streets and controls are being heard, but they sound theoretical in the night road.
