Tennis legend Gabriela Sabatini arrives in Santa Ponça in October, giving a prominent face to Mallorca’s revival of the WTA 125 women’s tournament.
Tennis Icon Sabatini Makes Mallorca Tournament a Personal Matter
Finally tennis for women on the island again – and with a name everyone has in mind: Gabriela Sabatini. From 4 to 12 October the Mallorca Country Club in Santa Ponça hosts the revival of the Mallorca Women’s Championships (WTA 125). I could already imagine yesterday how the courts would look in autumn light: the pine shadows longer, the soft click of rackets, and behind the clubhouse probably the scent of freshly brewed coffee.
Why Sabatini is important
Sabatini belongs to the players who have written tennis history: a US Open title in 1990 and the silver medal at the 1988 Olympics are among her great successes. In Mallorca she will not only accompany the tournament as ambassador but also personally honor the winners. A small bonus for the fans: she will participate in the Celebrity Padel tournament – that’s always a spectacle, especially when professionals and local VIPs face off.
Tournament format, guests and venues
Planned are 32 players from around the world, including players from Germany and Great Britain. The main draws run at the Country Club; the first rounds will also be played at the Polideportivo in Magaluf. This ensures short distances and a relaxed festival atmosphere – ideal for families and people who want to combine tennis with beach days.
Tickets, fringe program and sponsor
For those who want to get in early: during the opening weekend admission is free. After that, prices are in the normal range: day passes around 15 to 40 euros, VIP passes around 120–130 euros. The organizer is the e|motion group; their managing director Edwin Weindorfer emphasized that Mallorca is positioned as a year-round destination for high-quality tennis. The new title sponsor is the US company Vanda Pharmaceuticals.
For the island this means: world-class tennis, celebrity appearances, and a few days with more sport and less tourist bustle – at least in the early October hours. If you feel like it, come by, grab a seat in the small stands and enjoy the matches. I can already imagine the discussions in the street cafés: Who will lift the trophy, and who has the better slice?
