The island council reports nightly closures of the tunnels in Génova (Palma-bound only) and Bendinat (both directions) due to cleaning and maintenance work. Travelers should plan detours.
Génova and Bendinat Tunnels to Be Closed at Night
\nStarting tomorrow evening, nighttime works will begin on two important connecting routes on Mallorca: the tunnels in Génova and Bendinat will be closed for cleaning and maintenance work. The measures are intended to preserve the safety and condition of the road network — and at the least convenient times for drivers: at night.
\nWhat exactly is happening? The tunnel in Génova will be closed only in the Palma-bound direction. Bendinat, by contrast, will be closed completely in both directions. The closure times are: from 22:00 to 06:00. The works are expected to run until Monday morning, according to the island administration.
\nWhat this means for commuters and night owls
\nIn short: anyone planning to head toward Palma late in the evening should plan ahead. Local detours, additional signage and — in some places — traffic posts that regulate the flow are expected. In practice, that means longer travel times, especially on the access roads around the closures.
\nI was at the Avinguda last night and noticed the first warning signs going up: orange boards, flashing lights, a few police cars monitoring the traffic. Not a catastrophe, but annoying if you still have a late flight to catch or need to pick someone up at the station.
\nTips for the coming nights
\nA few simple pointers that can spare you the hassle:
\n- \n
- If possible, schedule trips for the day. \n
- Use public transport earlier — buses may also be delayed due to detours, but usually less stressful. \n
- Check navigation: many apps already show the closures and suggest alternative routes. \n
- If you live nearby: sounds from cleaning machines are normal. Closing windows helps — and a bit of understanding for the work as well. \n
Nighttime is not the best time for roadworks, I admit. On the other hand: cleaner tunnels, intact lighting and functioning drainage are things you miss only when they are missing. The administration emphasizes that the nocturnal time windows were chosen to minimize the daytime impact on traffic.
\nStay alert: notices and short-term changes are possible. If you want to be sure, check again in the afternoon on the websites of the traffic authority or on local traffic services — the information is updated regularly.
