In Park La Femu in s’Olivera, Palma inaugurated a redesigned area with fitness equipment, table tennis, and petanque. More trees, shade sails, and an expansion of the children's playground are planned.

More space to move: New area in Park La Femu

Early in the morning, before neighbors with coffee and dogs appeared, the workers rolled out the last mats: Park La Femu in Palma's s’Olivera district has a noticeably fresher look. Starting this week, there is now a small but fine fitness parcours, several table-tennis tables, and a petanque court – perfect for people who want to get outside briefly after work or during lunch breaks.

Short, practical, and planned

The city, according to the announcement, invested around 218,000 euros in the redesign. Sounds like a lot for a neighborhood park? Perhaps. But when you climb the new climbing frame in the morning or in the evening play a round of ping-pong at the tables with others, you realize: This is for people who don't want a gym membership, but fresh air and community.

Notably: Young trees were planted, seating was added, and more shade was provided. A shade sail is set to follow soon – a good plan for hot summer afternoons. And for those with children: the playground will be expanded next year, the city administration promises.

Neighborhood in focus

On the opening day I met Marta from Calle Marina: "Finally a place where the grandchildren can play and we don't get lost in the sand everywhere," she said with a laugh. The seniors who play boules every morning now have more space as well. The combination of fitness, play, and petanque is deliberately aimed at fostering community.

A quick note from experience: Because of the new trees, the ground is still a bit loose — sturdy footwear doesn't hurt. And yes, the table-tennis tables are robust, but bring your own equipment if you’re serious about playing.

What’s next

The city plans, besides the shade sail, better lighting for the evening hours. If everything goes to plan, the new children's play area will be finished in early summer of next year. For residents it's a bit of quality of life: less asphalt, more green, a meeting place where different generations spread out over the day.

So, if you live in s’Olivera or happen to be in Palma: stroll over, try a few push-ups, or start a game of table tennis. It feels like a small, well-meaning upgrade for everyday life. Not spectacular, but useful – and sometimes that's exactly the best thing.
