An attentive man observed a pickpocket near the Mercat de l’Olivar in the late morning and prevented the theft by loud intervention. Police were not immediately on the scene.
Attentive passerby apparently prevents pickpocketing
Late in the morning, the streets around the Carrer de Sant Miquel were busy again: sunny 24 °C, sidewalk cafés half full, and in the background the hustle around the Mercat de l’Olivar. Exactly there, on Wednesday, a man apparently foiled a theft. At least, if you trust the amateur video that shows the scene.
What it looked like
The eyewitness, a tourist or resident in their mid-40s, said he noticed a couple moving unusually close to an older vacationing couple. He filmed, yelled something in English — the clip clearly shows Pickpocket — be careful — and stepped in. While one woman turned away and fled, a man remained on site and was verbally confronted by the observer.
The alleged perpetrator apparently reacted angrily and asked loudly what was being recorded. The witness did not back down and kept filming. After a brief uproar, the paths parted: the vacationers headed to the next cafe, the man disappeared, the woman was already out of sight.
Police initially absent
Interestingly: while several passersby stayed and watched the scene, there is no sign of an immediate police arrival in the footage. Whether a report was filed later has not been confirmed. Such incidents are unfortunately not uncommon in Palma's city center, especially in busy areas around markets and shopping streets.
A neighbor from the street, whom I met shortly after the incident, said dryly: You have to look twice here, there is a lot of pushing and shoving, the sun may also make people a little sleepy.
What advice for next time?
A few simple tips that repeatedly help: keep valuables close to your body, tie bags shut, wallet in inner pockets, and become suspicious when faced with intrusive distractions — a child, a dog, or a supposed vendor can be part of a distraction tactic. If possible, speak up loudly and involve other passersby; often, awareness helps more than heroics.
Whether there will be criminal consequences will likely be determined by a report. For the affected travelers, the morning ended without a loss — thanks to an attentive bystander with a phone in hand and quick reflexes.
