The long-renovated Paseo Marítimo in Palma is nearing completion. Three construction sites remain open, with opening planned for the end of October or early November.
Almost finished: Paseo Marítimo to be open again by the end of October
\nYou can notice it in the small things: less construction noise in the morning, fewer construction vehicles on the Avenida. After months of closures and detours, the Paseo Marítimo in Palma is close to completion. The port authority APB expects the work to be finished by the end of October or the beginning of November. And yes – there will probably be a big street parade for the opening. Who would have thought asphalt could be so emotional?
\nWhat’s still happening: Currently the finishing works are underway at three sites. The staircase from the Hard Rock Café down into the Es Jonquet neighborhood is getting its last steps. In the Porto Pi area, work is being done on the bridge toward the cruise terminal, and in Sa Riera, near Avenida Argentina, an existing bridge is being widened. Machines idling, occasionally a drilling sound in late morning – you know it by now.
\nI was there a few days ago, just after seven, and saw workers in reflective vests laying cables. A neighbor who walks her small dog every morning said dryly: Endlich wieder Platz zum Flanieren, ohne Trillerpfeifen und Bauzäune. So simple it is: For many residents, the opening of Paseo Marítimo means shorter detours, better bus connections and more benches by the water.
\nWhat changes: It's not just about new asphalt. Wider sidewalks, better lighting and barrier-free access are promised. Cyclists will get clearer markings, and the small green spaces will be replanted – ideal for a shade in the autumn afternoon. Local businesses along the promenade hope for more foot traffic; restaurants expect a noticeable boost once the barriers are removed.
\nOf course questions remain: Will traffic around the harbor road become quieter in the future? How will large cruise ships affect the new environment? APB has announced dates on which citizens can ask questions – a good step, I think.
\nPractical for everyone: If you want to walk or take the bus into the city center in October, plan around the construction sites. Some bus routes have been temporarily diverted; signs are at the stops. The construction companies often work early so that daytime restrictions remain small. Still, it’s wise to allow a few extra minutes – trust is good, punctuality better.
\nFinally, a small tip: Visit on one of the first days after opening. Feel the sounds of conversations, strollers, rehearsal performances and probably a few drums during the parade. Paseo Marítimo is more than a street – it is a piece of city life that is becoming accessible again.
