A vacation day ended tragically: a man jumped into the water to save his wife – shortly after, he died despite prolonged resuscitation efforts.

Tragic evening at Son Bauló: rescue attempt ends in death

Late Friday afternoon, a stretch of beach at Son Bauló became an emergency site. At around 5:50 PM, a 67-year-old man jumped into the sea as his companion apparently had trouble swimming. After a few minutes several people and a lifeguard were on the scene – yet the man later died despite long resuscitation efforts.

What happened on site

Guests described chaotic scenes: towels were moved aside, shoes flew, voices cried out. A hotel lifeguard from Can Picafort immediately began life-saving measures and deployed a semi-automatic defibrillator. Later, emergency services and police took over. According to eyewitnesses, the responders worked for almost an hour with ventilation and chest compressions.

The wife of the deceased received medical treatment and was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Muro. There are currently no official updates on her condition.

Proximity to the coast and season play a role

October on Mallorca means fewer lifeguards at many beaches. The thin staff and changing currents make the situation riskier once shifts end and fewer supervisors patrol in the water. On warm days people often believe the sea is harmless; one mistake can change everything.

Some locals said that in the afternoon there was a light breeze and the water looked calm. That can be deceptive. Those who do not swim regularly should stay shallow or stay with others at the shore.

A call to all beachgoers

The local rescue services remind that you should realistically assess your own abilities. Not every instinct to help leads to success. Sometimes it is safer to call for professional help immediately and to ask for a flotation ring or other rescue device instead of entering deep water yourself.

In the coming days, the Guardia Civil and the local police will be present on beaches, according to local information. For those affected and their relatives, questions remain and above all, grief. Our thoughts are with the family.
