Summer weather in April: Mallorca picks up an early-summer pace
Sun, terraces and shorts: Mallorca is experiencing unusually warm days in April. Daytime temperatures locally climb toward 30°C, while nights remain cool — a great weather recipe for early-summer outings.
Summer weather in April: Mallorca picks up an early-summer pace
Warm days, cool nights – the perfect mix for terraces and Tramuntana walks
The island feels these days as if someone set the clock forward: cafés on the Passeig are filling with people in T‑shirts, the clinking of ice cream scoops drifts from the gelaterias on the Plaça, and along the harbour people walk their dogs by the railing. The thermometer plays along: during the day there's early-summer climate, while a cool breeze often sweeps through the neighbourhood in the evenings.
Place names and numbers almost sound like little holiday postcards: inland, Sa Pobla recently reported around 28 °C, on the north coast – Port de Pollença and the town of Pollença – around 27 °C were measured. Artà, Sineu and Petra also reached about 27 °C, and Llucmajor and Manacor showed around 26 °C. So anyone wanting to lie on the beach now will often already find early bathing days, as noted in Short escape from autumn: Mallorca gives us a few more beach days.
According to the national meteorological service AEMET, the sun will remain the main player for now. A lot of blue sky, at most harmless cloud fields, and only locally a strengthening wind. Models leave room for individual, short-lived changes – overall no significant rain is in sight. There is even a chance that the 30‑degree mark will be exceeded at some measuring stations, a scenario seen in coverage Mallorca swelters once more: Short heatwave brings late-summer warmth.
The week passes without extreme swings. At first daytime values continue to rise, from midweek the trend points to a slight cooling: 23 to 25 °C are forecast for Thursday and Friday. That's somewhat less than at the beginning of the week, but still above the seasonal average. The mild phase is expected to pick up again over the coming weekend.
An important detail for anyone coming to the island now or living here: nights remain noticeably cooler. In the south and in the heights of the Tramuntana the temperatures can drop to around 6 °C at night; elsewhere the low values are mostly between 8 and 11 °C. Mallorcans, accustomed to temperature changes, therefore like to reach for a light jacket in the evenings – and that's also a small tip for visitors: short sleeves in the morning, don't forget a jacket in the evening.
For the island's economy such spring temperatures are a welcome boost. Cafés and chiringuitos put chairs out on terraces, the first excursion boats fill up again, and hiking trails in the Serra de Tramuntana see people early in the morning taking advantage of the clear conditions. Fresh produce is available at the weekly markets, the air smells of orange blossom and brewed coffee.
A little irony is permitted: the almond trees seem to be checking whether this was all agreed with the calendar. For us this mainly means: get out into the open. Whether a bike tour through the plain of Sa Pobla, a walk in Portixol or a cappuccino in the Sant Francesc quarter behind the cathedral – the days invite small respites.
Outlook and advice in one: those planning to enjoy the island now should factor in daytime heat and cool nights. Sunscreen, light clothing and a thin jacket are usually sufficient. Mountain walkers should start early; those who prefer the beaches should choose the quiet morning hours. This is how to fully enjoy the unusually warm April weather – without rush, with an ice cream in hand and the smell of the sea in your nose.
