In early November the Moon will be unusually close: a supermoon will bring bright nights over Mallorca on November 5, 2025. Tips for the best viewing.
Supermoon on November 5 – a celestial event you shouldn't miss
If you're out for an evening walk in the coming days, pause and look east. On the evening of November 5, 2025 the Moon will be unusually close to Earth and appear as a so-called supermoon. Over Mallorca the light will be so clear that even the promenades along the Paseo Marítimo will, for a moment, look like photos.
When and how to observe best
Expect moonrise shortly after 5:15 PM – the full spectacle begins once dusk is complete. Practically: one hour after moonrise often offers the best conditions, as the contrast between sky and Moon is optimal. In Palma, head toward Castell de Bellver or the harbour; for quiet, go to Cap de Formentor or the bay of Cala Millor.
Why the Moon appears so large now: At perigee, the point in its orbit closest to Earth, the lunar companion is significantly nearer – around 357,000 kilometres. This makes it appear visibly larger; some observers report it looking up to 14% bigger and up to 30% brighter than an average full moon. Not a bad excuse for an evening walk.
More than just a big Moon
November brings not only the supermoon but, according to astronomy experts, also several meteor showers that can complement the sky show. It gets truly dark in rural areas of the island: Serra de Tramuntana, Santanyí or the coastal road near Llucmajor often have less light pollution – and thus a better experience.
The November full moon is nicknamed the "Beaver Moon" in English and North American traditions – because beavers were active at this time and hunters stored provisions. On Mallorca such names rather evoke long nights, open firesides and the first strong northerly winds.
Practical tips
If you want to photograph it: a telephoto lens helps with detail shots, a wide-angle with a very short exposure captures landscape and Moon together. Bring a blanket, dress warmly – coastal winds can be surprisingly chilly – and maybe a thermal mug of coffee. And: watch the roads; many people park spontaneously at viewpoints.
In short: November 5 offers a good chance to experience the sky over Mallorca in a special way. Clear nights are needed – so let's hope for few clouds and good visibility.
Tip: Look east in the evening; the supermoon remains visible into the early morning hours and sets off the west coast around sunrise.
