Sant Llorenç aims to become the 'golden' Christmas village – Balearic Islands in Ferrero competition
Sant Llorenç on Mallorca has been nominated as a candidate for the Spain-wide Ferrero competition. The municipality is hoping for lighting, sparkle and many votes from the region.
A small village with big lights in sight
On market day, around 11:00 a.m., elderly women sit on the plaza and are already discussing the red lights that could be installed in two weeks. Sant Llorenç des Cardassar has been nominated as the Balearic representative in Mallorca votes: Christmas shop-window competition invites you to stroll — an initiative in which a village can win extra lighting and festive decorations.
How the voting works
The selection takes place in several stages: first Mallorca vota: concurso de escaparates navidenos invita a pasear, then elimination rounds until the final in mid-December. Whoever in the family has a smartphone will have something to do in the coming weeks; the votes will decide whether the narrow streets of the municipality, the almond-tree slopes and the market square will be bathed in warm lights.
The organizers say they pay attention to places with tradition, a beautiful setting and a certain charm, as reflected in Concurso de decoración navideña en Calvià: luces, alféizares y orgullo vecinal. Sant Llorenç scores here with its archaeological sites, local crafts and proximity to some beaches — and yes, also with the neighboring farms that can show almond blossoms in winter if the weather cooperates.
What winning would bring
For the winning municipality the prize means more than just garlands: in past years kilometers of energy-efficient LEDs have been installed, a tall Christmas tree erected and shows held in the streets. For a place like Sant Llorenç this also means visitors, press and a short but intense revitalization of the town center — ideal for the café on the corner of Carrer Major, which may then have to open later.
The jury and the program promise that the initiative will not only shine but also remain practical: technicians will take care of installation and energy efficiency, and local associations should be involved in the decoration. The decision will be made on December 15 — enough time, then, to motivate neighbors, friends and holiday guests to vote.
A little skepticism, a little anticipation
Some in the village shrug: "Is this just a show event?" you hear at the bakery. Others see opportunities: students helping out in the hall, seniors selling cookies — and shopkeepers hoping the lights will stimulate buying. Either way: for Sant Llorenç it is a moment to show itself. And who knows — maybe this year there will be a very special atmosphere in the streets when fairy lights glitter in the evenings and the scent of almonds fills the air.
Important: The vote is online, every vote counts. A small click could mean that Sant Llorenç receives an extra-bright smile for a few weeks in December.
