Help for tenants, but not for everyone

The Balearic government has launched a new support program: up to €3,000 per year are intended to ease the burden on tenants. Sounds good, and yes — for many it really is a relief. Still: anyone hoping this will be a blanket solution will be disappointed. The details are decisive.

Who it helps and who gets left out

The funding comes from a pool of €9.3 million in total. Applications are only possible from 14 November; then it is "first come, first served" until 15 December. Practically: if you are at your computer at 9:30 a.m., you have a better chance than someone who only has time in the afternoon.

The conditions sound harmless but are tight: the monthly rent may be at most €900 — a requirement from the national housing ministry. In cities like Palma this is a real barrier: many apartments are above that. The regional government had requested an increase to €1,200, but it did not pass.

Income, paperwork and exceptions

The household income limit is usually €25,200 per year. For large families or people with disabilities the threshold rises to €42,000. You also need Spanish citizenship or a valid residence permit, a valid rental contract and proof of income and payments — e.g. bank statements, pay slips, tax notices. Nothing moves forward without complete documentation.

Important: the aid is earmarked for rent payments and generally cannot be combined with other state housing benefits. For particularly vulnerable people — such as victims of domestic violence or those facing imminent eviction — there are relaxations.

Practical advice from everyday life

Yesterday morning I was chatting with two neighbors at the square and thought: those who are just above the income limits or pay €1,000 in rent will be left out. If you apply, have these documents ready: ID/residence permit, current rental contracts, bank statements for the last three months, pay or pension statements and an IBAN for the transfer. And: be early — the fund is limited.

Conclusion: the program is a step in the right direction, but not a panacea. It will help many households, but for others it remains too narrowly defined. The discussion about a higher rent cap and broader measures will surely continue — and we will keep following it.
