Summer Connection: Volotea starts direct flights from Vitoria to Menorca from 1 June
Twice-weekly service from Vitoria strengthens the Basque Country's connection to the Balearic Islands
On 1 June 2026 a new route will take off from Vitoria: Volotea will then fly twice a week — Mondays and Thursdays — directly to Menorca. For travelers from Álava, that means shorter journeys to summer vacations; for the Balearic Islands it provides an additional access route during the peak season. The agreement is part of a seasonal subsidy contract with the Vitoria airport promotion company and covers about 72 flights on the route with nearly 13,000 seats.
When I walk along the Passeig in the morning, with the scent of freshly baked ensaimada in the air, it is such connections you feel: more people with suitcases, new snatches of conversation on buses and in taxis, rental bikes circling more often. Not every air route is just a number in a table — it changes itineraries, work schedules and the rhythm of small local businesses.
With this move Volotea further expands its offering at Vitoria airport: alongside Madrid and Barcelona, Menorca now becomes the third direct destination. For the year the airline plans to offer around 110,000 seats from Vitoria; since operations began there in November 2025 more than 51,000 passengers have already been carried. The company cites an on-time performance of around 90 percent and a high recommendation rate of 97 percent.
At the regional level this means more connections in the Basque Country: Volotea is currently the only airline with regular services from all three local airports — Bilbao, San Sebastián and now Vitoria. In Bilbao the airline operates a base and serves numerous domestic and international destinations; several routes are offered from San Sebastián. Overall, around 870,000 seats are planned for the Basque Country in 2026, an increase compared with the previous year, mirroring broader capacity moves elsewhere such as EasyJet's announced capacity expansion in Spain for 2026.
For Menorca and the Balearics every additional flight in the summer months is welcome: restaurants, boat rental companies, taxi drivers and small hotels feel the effect immediately. Although the new connection will not lead directly to Mallorca, an improved offer between northern Spain and the Balearics as a whole strengthens the destination network and makes combined trips easier — for example, travel to Menorca and then onward by ferry or an internal Balearic flight to Mallorca, such as the direct flight from Erfurt–Weimar to Palma in summer 2026.
What remains to be seen is whether the new frequency will meet expectations, how demand and prices will develop over the summer months and what effect this will have on local services. One thing is certain: the season is approaching, and on the coast, with clear air and a light sea breeze, you can already sense that the islands are preparing for more activity.
In short: a convenient option for holidaymakers from the Basque Country, a model that can revive small businesses and balcony cafés on Menorca — and an indirect gain for Mallorca as the Balearics as a whole become better connected.
Outlook: Travel routes will become more flexible and short trips more attractive. Anyone planning a quiet September on Menorca or a combined Balearic trip should keep an eye on the new dates.
