At Palma's major airport construction site, another multi-story wall collapsed. Passengers were not affected, but the stoppages and investigations are causing unrest on site.
Another Collapse at the Palma Airport Construction Site
Late Friday morning, around 09:30, there was another incident at the Palma airport's large construction site. In an area not accessible to travelers, a multi-story section of a construction wall collapsed and landed on a prefabricated module. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the module was significantly damaged.
What happened on site
Eyewitnesses report a cloud of dust and the dull bang that could be heard in the small cafés along the road to the Carretera del Aeropuerto. Technicians from the construction management immediately cordoned off the area, construction work was halted, and the fire department and security services arrived. According to the operator Aena, immediate inspections were initiated and a sanctions procedure was opened against the contractor.
Important: The area where the wall collapsed is not in the terminal's public areas â therefore there were no passengers affected. Nevertheless the scene is unsettling: in the evening photos the damaged prefabricated element was clearly visible.
Not an isolated incident
This is not the first incident since the extensive renovations began. In June there was a collapse near the baggage belts in the arrivals hall, where a protective shield broke. In February, a portion of the ceiling cladding fell in front of the security checkpoints. Such incidents fuel a sense among residents and workers that controls should be tighter.
Workers who wish to remain anonymous report a high workload on the construction site and tight deadlines. Officially, all safety protocols are being observed â investigations are now to determine where the gaps were.
What to expect next
The operator has halted the work in the affected sector, inspection engineers are on site, and the results of the investigation are expected in the coming days. There may also be fines and sanctions against the contracted company. For travelers, little will change in the short term: public check-in and processing areas remain in operation, as Aena emphasizes.
Nevertheless: For many Mallorca residents, the series of incidents is a warning sign. In conversations on the Plaça de Cort in the afternoon, I heard phrases like: If mistakes happen here, what about other projects? The mood is tense, and distrust of the pace of the construction work is growing.
We will stay on it and report as soon as there are new findings about the cause of the collapse or possible consequences for the construction plan.
Note: If information changes promptly, we will update the information. Safety comes first â and that is what many people who work at the airport daily or use it expect.
