Autumn approaches on the island: Still sun, but a rain band will soon bring relief

Last summer days, cool nights and an announced window of rain

The island is still breathing summer, but very quietly: during the day the thermometer currently climbs to around 30°C in sunny spots, at night it falls to just under 20°C, giving the streets of Mallorca a pleasant calm. On the Passeig Marítim in Palma the early-morning joggers wear thin long sleeves, in Cala Major fishermen mend their nets, and in small harbour bars you can hear the soft clink of espresso cups – a late-summer mix that feels like a transitional period.

The national weather service AEMET reports that a new area of rain could reach the island in the coming days, as described in Short late summer — then a weather turnaround: What Mallorca needs to know now. According to the current assessment, the probability of rain increases to about 70 percent on Thursday and Friday, and AEMET has even issued a Yellow Weather Warning in Mallorca: Brief Rain, Strong Scent of Autumn. This does not automatically mean continuous rain, but certainly more clouds, isolated showers and a welcome cooling for many.

Through Wednesday it will remain largely sunny and warm. The wind usually blows weak to gusty from the southwest, so exposed coastal sections will feel gusts, but conditions in towns remain relaxed. Nights will continue to be mild – ideal for restful sleep; you can hear children in the squares and the hum of air conditioners is more restrained than in high season.

Last Saturday the island showed its warm side: only Llucmajor cracked the 30-degree mark, closely followed by Ses Salines and Port de Pollença with around 29.6°C. Campos reported 29.5°C, Cap Blanc reached about 29.1°C. For agriculture and gardens, the prospect of rain is good news. Many olive trees and the first vines breathe a sigh of relief – a splash of rain after dry weeks helps stabilize the soil. Dust in narrow streets and on terraces will be bound, and the air will become clearer. Cyclists who ride the switchbacks in the Tramuntana in the early evening will appreciate the fresher breeze.

At the same time, this does not mean that summer is over: those planning a beach day can still catch the remaining hot days. My tip from the market in Sineu: morning at the beach, afternoon a walk through the village centre, and in the evening share a plate of sobrassada and a glass of white wine on the Plaça – Mallorca currently shows itself in many good facets.

Practical for tourists and locals: flexibility is now useful. Schedule outdoor excursions for the morning or midday hours in case showers develop on Thursday/Friday. A light raincoat and closed shoes are usually enough to continue enjoying the island. Those who love seawater should remember that incoming rain only slowly affects water temperature – at the moment the bathing water remains pleasantly warm.
