Autumn arrives on Mallorca: Brief rain, a fresh morning and the reminder to pack a sweater
At night, thunderstorms in eastern Mallorca woke residents. Heavy rain was intense in places, but damage remained limited. Aemet forecasts cooler days — for locals and visitors this means: don't forget your jacket.
Autumn announces itself: Thunderstorms at night, a clear morning
In the middle of the night, around 2:30 a.m., a roll of thunder woke many Mallorcans from their sleep. In Son Ferriol and further east there were flashes and crashes, as if summer had briefly left the door ajar and autumn slipped in. Within minutes a narrow band of thunderstorms moved over Manacor and Campos, prompting some to pull the curtains aside — not only because of the noise, but also to see the first raindrops on the streets, similar to reports in Autumn Knocks: Short Calm After Storm — New Low on Sunday.
In the morning the island still smelled of wet asphalt and blown pine bark. Puddles stood on the Passeig Mallorca, the cobblestones in small alleys glittered, and the seagulls seemed slightly bewildered, as if taking the weather change personally. Cafés in Palma were still drying chairs; regulars shrugged up their shoulders and half-laughed at the sudden change in weather.
Where it hit hardest
The east of the island and the interior received the heaviest showers. Residents of Sant Llorenç report briefly higher water levels on access roads, and in places small rambla beds ran faster than usual. In Palma, the precipitation remained rather local and intense, but short — a typical Mallorca thunderstorm that arrives quickly and often disappears just as quickly.
Infrastructure and consequences: Fortunately there was little major damage. The fire brigade only had to respond to isolated incidents; so far there are no reports of large-scale flooded roads. A few drains appeared blocked, and traffic backed up for a short time at Coll d'en Rebassa, but the island faced the day more relieved than fearful.
Looking ahead: Pack a sweater
Aemet has already warned of a cooler phase: daytime values around 22–24 °C are likely for the coming days, and at night it can cool to around 13 °C. For holidaymakers this means practically: don't leave the thin sweater at home, a fact echoed in Night chill in Mallorca: Autumn arrives — and brings peaceful nights. The second half of the week should become a bit milder, with peaks around 26–27 °C, but with a changeable character — sun, a shower and sun again, as is familiar here.
Practical tips for the day: Anyone strolling through one of the lively markets should take a light rain jacket; those planning a coffee on the beach should check whether the wind comes from the north or east — it brings the fresh air, as advised in Clouds Gather: Rainy Weather Coming to Mallorca — Pack an Umbrella. And for those who fancy a walk: after a brief shower the air is often clearest, the view of the Tramuntana and the sea cutting as if with a fresh brush.
Autumn in Mallorca is rarely nasty, rather direct: it reminds us that the island has more faces than just summer heat. For many this is a relief — fewer tourist crowds, longer sunsets and the soothing sound of drops on tin roofs.
So: check your shoes, lay out your coat and don't forget the camera. Between the showers a walk along the promenade can be just the right reward — with clear air, a few scattered seagulls and the quiet creak of old boats in the harbor.
