Night chill in Mallorca: Autumn arrives — and brings peaceful nights
From Son Torrella to Capdepera: temperatures dropped locally to just 10 degrees at night. For many residents this means better nights, a jacket in the morning and more sunny autumn days ahead.
Autumn mood at night: Mallorca cools noticeably
The night into Tuesday felt on the island like a small reminder that summer doesn't last forever. In Palma the morning smelled of freshly baked ensaimadas, at the cafés on Carrer de Sant Miquel you could hear the clinking of cups and the relieved sigh: the fans stayed off. On the Tramuntana mountains the leaves rustled more quietly — the air was noticeably cooler.
Between mountain freshness and coastal mildness
AEMET recorded a wide range at night: in Son Torrella the thermometer fell to just 10 degrees, in the Serra d'Alfàbia and in Lluc it was around 13 degrees. On the plaza in Petra and in Manacor the values were about 15 degrees, with similar figures reported by the UIB. Along the coast it stayed milder: Calvià and Port de Pollença recorded around 17 degrees, and at the Capdepera lighthouse temperatures of up to 22 degrees were measured. In short: everything from 10 to 22 degrees was present.
What the cooling means for everyday life
For many residents the night chill brought immediate benefits. Windows open, fans off, quieter nights — finally sleeping through without the constant hum of devices. I heard from neighbours who for the first time in a long while dug out a thin blanket. In the fields around Sineu workers wore light jackets, and on promenades like in Portixol or Alcúdia you could see walkers in thin sweaters watching the harbour crows have their breakfast.
The change is also noticeable in conversation: at the bakery in Palma comments swung between "Finally" and "What a pity, summer is ending." A café owner remarked half-ironically: "More sales of hot coffee and fewer of iced coffee." Small everyday changes that, for a moment, alter the island's rhythm.
Weather note: not only mild
However, the pleasant cooling does not mean Mallorca will be wet and grey all the time. Weather services warn of showers and isolated thunderstorms for some parts of the island — with local severe weather alerts, as described in Autumn arrives on Mallorca: Brief rain, a fresh morning and the reminder to pack a sweater. Practically speaking: pack a jacket, don't forget an umbrella, and drive mountain roads with caution. Especially in the Tramuntana, precipitation can quickly turn paths slippery and make field edges marshy.
Looking ahead: autumn days that try both sides
The big heatwave is over for now, as explained in Short late summer — then a weather turnaround: What Mallorca needs to know now. Still, October in Mallorca often behaves like a chameleon, as noted in Jackets in the Morning: Mallorca Feels the First Chill: a jacket in the morning, a T-shirt at noon, and perhaps a glass of wine on the terrace in the evening. These typical autumn hybrid days are a gift for many — still enough sun for the beach, but already time for warm dishes and longer walks. For tourists it's ideal: quieter beaches and a more relaxed island.
Side note: AEMET published the exact measurements today. For Mallorca residents the feeling remains: nights are calmer, the air clearer, and everyday life regains a few quieter hours. Such small weather changes remind us how closely nature and daily rhythms are connected here.
