The Gulf airline Etihad plans to bring its Palma connection forward next year and increase frequency. For hotels, restaurants and luxury services on the island this means additional opportunities.
Etihad brings Mallorca season forward: More flights, more discerning guests
Start in May, more connections and Airbus A321LR with premium seats
Son Sant Joan will be a bit busier next year: the airline Etihad has initiated internal planning to move the start of its direct connections between Palma and Abu Dhabi forward to 16 May 2027. It is also planned to increase the previous three weekly flights to four per week. Specific flight days and exact departure times are to be announced officially in the coming months.
Technically, everything follows the proven pattern: A321LR jets with about 160 seats will be used, equipped with a larger share of premium cabins. With this, the airline is clearly targeting business travellers and well-heeled holidaymakers. The route started in summer 2026 and initially operated on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays; demand in this segment has apparently led to the planned adjustments.
For Palma this means an extension of the warm-season flight schedule: anyone watching the streets around the Plaza de Cort in an afternoon sees hotel concierges, taxi drivers and restaurant owners preparing for guests with higher expectations. Earlier arrivals bring not only more visitors but also change the seasonal distribution: business guests and luxury travellers can keep appointments in May, bookings at boutique hotels grow, and the upscale addresses in the old town and along Passeig Mallorca benefit for longer.
The shift forward is a small invitation for various sectors: limousine services gain more working days, boutiques on Avinguda Jaume III can expect additional customers, and the gastronomy—from tapas bars to high-end restaurants—receives a second wave of reservations before the summer peak. Organisers of conferences and exclusive events also see opportunities to move offerings into the shoulder seasons.
This is not only good for business but also for the occupancy of more sustainable offers: smaller upscale hotels can take advantage of the new demand rather than avoiding short-term mass flows. At the same time, the connection is an opportunity to position Mallorca as a destination for discerning long stays or cultural weekend visits outside the three summer months.
Practically, airline plans can still change until final publication on bookable sales channels. Those already planning should follow the official notices from the carrier and use flexible booking options. Locally, actors are already in motion: travel agencies on Passeig del Born are ordering information material, hotels are checking their service plans, and the small coffee stand at Plaça Weyler is already putting more espresso pots into operation as business guests increasingly hurry to morning meetings.
Looking ahead: if Etihad further expands its frequency in the future—internal talks have already discussed a daily flight for 2028 if demand remains stable—Palma could benefit in the long term from access to new markets. That also means the city and tourist infrastructure should plan adjustments: more transfer capacity, coordinated services in hotels and restaurants, and tailored offers for upscale travellers.
It is a small signal but with tangible effects: one month earlier on the calendar and one extra flight pair per week change the atmosphere in Palma. When the sun peeks over the bay on a May morning and the baggage carts roll up to the quay, you notice that the season does not only begin in June. For many here it is good news—more working days, more targeted guests and an opportunity to position Mallorca even more upmarket.
What matters now: Travellers should wait for the airline's official announcements; local businesses can use the preparations to align services, transfers and offers with more demanding customers. And for everyone who still likes empty streets and mild weather: those who book early often find quiet spots in May.
