The works on Plaza de Santo Domingo de la Calzada, the last section of the new Paseo Marítimo, are nearly finished. New access routes to Es Jonquet are being created, along with more greenery and a playground.
Almost finished: The Paseo Marítimo gets its last puzzle piece
\nWhen you walk along the harbor in the morning and smell the sea and the construction site at the same time, you know: something is changing. Plaza de Santo Domingo de la Calzada, right by the Hard Rock Café, is the last piece of the new Paseo Marítimo in Palma that is still under construction—and the construction fences are slowly giving way.
\nWhat is changing exactly
\nInstead of the old road that ran along the bottom edge, three new illuminated access points up into the historic fishing district Es Jonquet are being created. That means less car traffic at the foot of the promenade, more space for trees, benches and pedestrians. A small new green area is planned, along with a playground that can already be imagined bustling in the afternoon: children on swings, parents with coffee from the kiosk next door – something like that.
\nThe monument of Saint Domingo de la Calzada is also being restored. The works are supported with European funds, as a construction supervisor told me last week when asked about financing. The scaffold has already largely come down, the inscription looks clearer again when you look closely.
\nHow the change feels
\nYou can feel the differences: the paths are wider, the lighting is discreet – not glaring spots, but warm light that highlights the steps. In the evenings, the neighborhood becomes safer, and during the day the new access is practical for people walking from the harbor to Es Jonquet without having to take the steep, narrow alley.
\nYes, there was noise and dust in the last months. Some shop owners on the promenade complained about delivery problems; someone from a corner cafe told me that regular customers still came daily – 'we remain persistent,' she said with a laugh.
\nWhat is still missing
\nThe finishing works are said to be completed in the next days according to the signs: plantings, finishing touches on the paving and the official handover. The city has announced that if the weather is nice there might be a small opening event – perhaps a local musical ensemble, perhaps just a few speeches and a few cups of coffee.
\nFor the neighborhood this mainly means one thing: more space to stroll and less through traffic. For visitors, soon: a lighter, prettier way up to Es Jonquet. And for all who like to watch how their city changes piece by piece, this is a pleasant, almost soothing end to a construction site.
\nI spoke with residents early in the morning and even walked the corner myself – who hasn't seen it yet: stop by before the benches are taken.
