Construction on the final section of Palma's seaside promenade is drawing to a close. Plaza de Santo Domingo is being redesignedâwith stairs, green spaces, and a new playground.
Almost finished: a new section of Palma's Seaside Promenade
\nWhen you walk along the seaside promenade at seven in the morning, you smell the sea first, then the fresh concrete of the construction site â and yes, occasionally also the coffee aroma from the Hard Rock CafĂ© at Plaza de Santo Domingo de la Calzada. This very plaza is currently the final puzzle piece on the new section of the promenade in Palma.
\n\nWhat changes
\nInstead of the old through street that ran along the water until now, the area is being reorganized: three illuminated entrances will lead up to the historic fishing quarter Es Jonquet in the future. The stairs and ramps replace the narrow street â that creates room for more footpaths, trees and seating directly by the water.
\n\nParticularly noticeable: a small but fine playground is planned. Parents with strollers in the afternoons will surely quickly discover it as a meeting point. In addition, the statue of Saint Domingo de la Calzada will be restored with funds from European programs â a bit of city-history care never hurts.
\n\nResidents, visitors, everyday life
\nA woman from Es Jonquet, whom I met this morning, shook her head half amused, half relieved: "Finally more space to stroll. But hopefully it stays peaceful when the tourists arrive." Such voices show: the redesign will not only visually make an impact but also change daily life â positive if the balance is right.
\n\nThe lighting at the new entrances is intentionally warm, so that in the evenings there is no harsh promenade atmosphere. And for a few more meters of greenery, almost everyone in the city has signed â at least in spirit.
\n\nWhen is it finished?
\nThe final works on the plaza are to be completed soon. Minor finishing touches will take a few more weeks, but most is visibly finished: new paving, seating steps, plant tubs and the three entrances that connect the district better.
\n\nWho walks by today sees craftsmen, a few delivery trucks and the first pedestrians testing the new paths. Nothing dramatic â rather the reassuring sound of a city slowly reordering itself.
\n\nBrief overview: Plaza de Santo Domingo de la Calzada â last construction site on the Paseo MarĂtimo. Three illuminated entrances to Es Jonquet. More greenery, new footpaths, playground. Monument restoration with EU funding. Completion in the coming weeks.
