After half a year of construction the new underpass at Verge de Lluc station in Palma has opened: two traffic lanes, a wider sidewalk and improved visibility for residents.
New underpass beneath the railway tracks at Verge de Lluc is complete
After about six months of construction the neighborhood around the Verge de Lluc stop in Palma can breathe again. The old bridge structure was removed and replaced by a new underpass that now distributes traffic under the tracks much better: instead of a narrow passage there are now two lanes, plus a wider sidewalk for pedestrians.
Work began at the end of summer 2025. For rail passengers this repeatedly meant changing trains: as long as the tracks were being renewed, a rail replacement service operated; once works finished, SFM trains returned to the summer timetable after the Verge de Lluc construction.
Cost: around €890,000. A sum that after project completion hardly feels like a number anymore, but like a relief in everyday life: delivery drivers get through faster, pedestrians have more space, and visibility when turning is clearer. In a neighborhood where children often use scooters and bicycles on their way to school, this is noticeable — you hear friendly calls more often again instead of honking cars.
The new underpass is not only wider, it is clearer. This makes passing easier for pedestrians, adults carrying shopping bags as well as older neighbors with walkers. During a stroll on a mild morning one could see an elderly couple using the wider walking zone while a city bus slowly passed and made room. Small scenes that show: infrastructure is more than concrete — it changes movement patterns.
For traffic the second lane means less congestion at peak times. In the days after completion the queue at the entrance noticeably shortened, say truck drivers and residents. That also has a side effect: less idling traffic often means less noise and exhaust for the people living along the route.
It is important to emphasize: the construction phase was intensive, but planned. Those responsible opted for a complete renewal of the bridge instead of a series of small repairs. That explains the temporary inconveniences — and at the same time justifies a longer period of calm, because the structure is now designed to last for years.
Such small interventions have a greater impact on the city. When places like the underpass at Verge de Lluc are tidied up, traffic is distributed more evenly, sidewalks become safer, and the neighborhood regains space. This matters for Palma: it is not only the large boulevard projects that improve life, but the many manageable measures right on your doorstep.
Outlook: Those driving through Verge de Lluc should pay attention to changed lanes in the coming weeks and try the new sidewalk. For urban planners the lesson remains: with good timing, clear alternative solutions for rail passengers and a few extra meters of space, everyday life and traffic in Palma can be made gradually more pleasant.
