Roadworks at Cala Llombards: Three kilometres, many improvements

Almost €900,000 for better surface, new signage and flood prevention measures

In the morning you can still smell the nearly fresh asphalt on the MA-6100 and hear the distant roar of the sea – it's a small, very Mallorcan mix that's heard here more often these days. The access road to the settlement and bay of Cala Llombards is currently being renewed: on a nearly three-kilometre stretch that connects the roundabout on the MA-6100 with the entrance to Cala Llombards, a new layer of asphalt, drainage measures and new traffic signs are being installed.

The investment amounts to almost €900,000. For people who live here or spend their holidays here, that primarily means one thing: a more comfortable drive. Potholes and deep ruts will hopefully soon be a thing of the past. Those who drive back from the bakery in Santanyí in the morning or up from the bay to the main road in the evening will notice the difference – less jolting, less dust, more comfort.

For locals this is more than just a smooth surface. Safety matters: emergency vehicles, buses and delivery vans should be able to use the route faster and with less risk in future. Bicycle tours, which have become more popular in recent years, also benefit indirectly because traffic will be calmer and more predictable. Parents taking children to the beach and older residents who regularly travel to Santanyí are among those who will welcome a more reliable road.

The works are limited to the section mentioned; other roads in the hinterland remain unaffected. In addition to the asphalt, technical interventions are being carried out to prevent flooding during heavy rain. This is important: after a downpour the small coastal strip here is sensitive, and standing water can not only hamper traffic but also undermine trees and walls. Signage will also be renewed, which is particularly useful for tourists looking for the way to the bay or parking areas.

Santanyí and Cala Llombards attract a very international audience; many German residents and visitors appreciate the area. The white sandy beaches and clear water are a draw, but good access is part of the experience. When the car is less bouncy and the route leads without detours, there is more time for the essentials: the view of the sea, a pintxito in town or a stroll across the village square with the sound of the church in the background.

A small everyday scene: around nine o'clock fishermen park their cars not far from the roundabout, a craftsman unloads material, and an elderly woman pushes her shopping trolley up the ramp. Such sequences run more smoothly when the road is in good condition. That brings everyday relief and helps local businesses because deliveries can arrive on time.

Of course roadworks are also an opportunity to think further: cycle lanes and pedestrian crossings could be examined at busy points, and benches with views over the countryside would sweeten waiting times. Such ideas would, however, need separate planning and financing. Today it's primarily about the basics: a solid road surface, fewer flooding risks and clearer signposts.

For visitors this means: those who drive to Cala Llombards soon can expect a more relaxed arrival. For residents it means a bit of everyday relief. In Mallorca it is often the small improvements to the roadscape that ultimately give back a lot of comfort – and anyone standing at the roundabout on the MA-6100 looking out to sea will notice that a good surface sometimes provides almost as much pleasure as a perfect day at the beach.

Outlook: Once the works are completed, access should be significantly more pleasant again. A few extra seats, better pedestrian crossings or small bike lanes would be nice next steps — ideas that will surely be discussed in town halls and neighborhood circles.
