Sa Pobla: Nou Camp sports hall gets new wooden floor — improved spectator comfort expected
The municipal sports hall next to Nou Camp in Sa Pobla has received a new wooden parquet floor after more than 25 years. Funding from the Consell, movable stands and an electronic scoreboard will follow — a small everyday gain for clubs, schools and neighbours.
Fresh finish, new step: The hall next to Nou Camp shines
On a cool morning in Sa Pobla there is a faint smell of wood dust and clear varnish in the air. Passers-by near Nou Camp (see Sa Pobla: Nou Camp sports hall gets new wooden floor — improved spectator comfort expected) can still hear the distant sawing of the workers who for several days have been replacing the old hall floor with new parquet. Not a big show, but for the people here a small, tangible change in everyday life.
What exactly was done — and who pays
The ageing surface, more than 25 years old, was removed and replaced with a modern wooden parquet floor. Besides the aesthetic upgrade, the new floor mainly brings a practical advantage: it is gentler on the joints, provides better cushioning and reduces the risk of injury during jumps and quick changes of direction. The measure was financed with €127,000, provided by the Consell de Mallorca. A reassuring sign for a place heavily used by youth teams, schools and recreational groups.
In the early morning hours neighbors stopped to look; an older woman dryly commented: 'Not as much fuss as a new restaurant, but necessary.' That sober approval shows how much such infrastructure affects daily life — without much fanfare, but with great benefit.
What is still planned: stands and scoreboard
The work is not yet complete. In the coming weeks movable stands are to be installed so that more spectators can sit comfortably during youth and league matches. A new electronic scoreboard is also planned — a wish of many coaches and parents so that scores and game time are finally clearly visible.
If the stands and the scoreboard arrive this quarter, the hall will be ready in time for the colder season. For local clubs this means less improvisation during matches and a better stage for youth tournaments: more audience, more atmosphere, more support for the children at home games.
Why this is more than just a new parquet for Sa Pobla
Such refurbishments seem unspectacular, almost solidly civic. But that is exactly why they are important: schools use the hall for physical education, youth teams train here, and in the evenings the stands fill with parents and neighbors. A solid floor extends the hall's lifespan, reduces long-term repair costs and provides a safe training place — especially at a time when every municipality must watch its expenses closely.
A volleyball player from the recreational group summed it up in a few honest words: 'Jumping is much more comfortable now.' Such small pleasures change the perception of a place. When you see the lights in the hall at night and the stands slowly fill, you hear the jingle of keys, the laughter of teenagers and sometimes the distant honk of the tractors from the plain — typically Sa Pobla breathes easier: Calle Comerç redesigned — opportunities and open questions, a mix of sport, village life and fieldwork.
What remains: a functioning sports facility that makes everyday life easier and provides space for movement, encounter and endurance. Not a grand prestige project, but exactly what a community needs daily. And perhaps, with a bit of luck, a few louder cheers at the next youth matches.
