First Rain Clouds After the Heatwave: A Hopeful Sign for Mallorca

Finally signs of cooling – but no guarantee of island-wide rain yet

The island has been sweating in recent weeks: day after day thermometers climbed above the 30 °C mark; this Monday the thermometer in Palma shows around 35 °C, and up to 37 °C are possible inland and in the south. The heat remains noticeable not only between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. but especially during the nights: many people report bedrooms that hardly cool down and delayed recovery.

But a change in the weather is visible on the horizon. The most interesting day is Friday, 21 August: according to current model calculations the day could become more unsettled and bring heavier regional precipitation. From Wednesday the air will become more unstable; the sky can get more restless during the day and the first drops are possible at night. On Thursday the wind should also shift to the southwest and freshen moderately – a typical accompaniment when moister air flows into the island region.

For Andalusia or the Spanish mainland such a weather pattern would be quite familiar. In Mallorca, however, rain after a long dry spell is particularly welcome: gardens can breathe again, olive and almond trees can absorb water, and the air immediately feels fresher. For farmers, municipal park teams and for everyone who drags a watering can in the morning, rain would have practical value. A word of caution: Aemet stresses the uncertainty of the models. Thunderstorms can vary greatly on a local scale. One village may get a heavy shower while the neighboring valley remains dry. For those who want to enjoy the moment: at seven in the morning on the Paseo Marítimo you currently hear the hum of delivery drivers, the heat still lies like a blanket on the seats. A bank of clouds slowly rolling in from the southwest brings a smile to some passers-by: that could already bring the first longed-for drops tomorrow.
